Body found in wheel well of plane at Dulles Airport

Body Found In Wheel Well Of Plane At Dulles Airport
An unidentified man's body was discovered Saturday in the wheel well of a plane parked at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

"Police tell us this was a South African Airways jet that was parked now in a remote part of the airport. Grounds crews found the body this afternoon."

Airport authorities say the male body was recovered from the landing gear of an Airbus A340 belonging to South African Airways. The flight arrived in Dulles Wednesday.

According to South African Airways, the plane initially departed from Johannesburg and made one stop in Dakar, Senegal before arriving in the U.S. It's still unclear when the body got into the wheel well of the plane.

In a statement reprinted in the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for South African Airways said, "We regret any loss of human life and are deeply concerned about the suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident."

Authorities say the discovery of the body did not disrupt the airport's normal operation. The Fairfax County medical examiner's office is currently investigating the incident.

Sounds to me the security is NOT tight enough when the planes are on the ground if civilians and just anyone can access the plane, cargo or wheel wells of an aircraft. Although this is tragic, it would have been even more of a tragedy had the person put an explosive or sabotaged the aircraft and injured or killed the passengers and pilots. Better security is definately needed.

The story says "According to South African Airways, the plane initially departed from Johannesburg and made one stop in Dakar, Senegal before arriving in the U.S. " US does not have control of foreign countries security. I agree it could have been a lot worse if the intentions were malicious.

A good reason to check that part of the plane. I'm very surprised all airlines don't.

i have to agree, if he could get to that plane undetected, he also could have had a bomb stapped to him

We hear about stowaways so often you'd think people would start getting the idea it isn't a very good idea. Has anyone survived a trans ocean flight in a wheel well yet? I don't recal hearing about it if so.

Someone thought they'd catch a ride on the airplane. That's why there are no hobo's in aviation.

It you had ever seen an aircraft with the gear up you would know how little excessive space there is to hide in forgetting the cold and lack of air during the trip.

Sadly, he most likely froze. The temp. at a high altitude could get mighty cold.

It's certain that this man had no idea of the consequences of doing this.
All he he wanted to do was come to America.
Yet there are people in America who seem to have made a "hobby" out of bashing Her at every oppourtunity. Something to ponder....

People everywhere need to realize that at the altitude these planes fly there is not enough oxygen to sustain life and the temp is way below freezing also and unless they are in a pressurized cabin you will die.

These stowaways dont realize the tire well is not pressurized and temps fall to below zero. There is also little space in there when the landing gear retracts. Usually it crushes the stowaway and the body falls out when the landing gear is lowered for landing.
