Strong lineup for NBA Dunk Contest could signal sagging event's revival

Forecast: Dunks
The NBA Dunk Contest has waned in popularity since its golden era in the late 1980s, when Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins were putting on iconic aerial displays. But if it were ever going to make a comeback, this could be the year.

The signature event of All-Star Weekend -- let's be honest: the game itself is a snoozefest -- got a much-needed infusion of star power this year. Among the contenders are: the defending champion, who won it as a rookie; the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year; a former No. 1 overall draft choice; an additional top-10 draft pick from each of the past two years; and, oh yeah, the guy who did this in a game and pretty much rendered the Dunk Contest a moot point.

Check out the dunk-porn video above to see the contestants in action, and learn more about them in this handy slideshow:

I think it's time to raise the hoop. It not how good you are but how tall you are.

Nothing more boring or mundane than watching a bunch of gifted 6-10 jumpers slamming a basketball down in a metal ring. What's the skill there? It's ridiculous! The NBA needs to increase the basket to 12 foot.

How about I.L.O. the dunk contest. . . . . . let's see if anyone can make 10-in-a-row from the free-throw line. I know it seems like a small thing, but it would be embarrassingly difficult for these millionaires.

Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, and Dave Bing could dunk, and have dunked during games, but it was considered to be "showing-off" in those days.

The Ringling Bros. would be proud of today' game. . . . . hmmm, maybe they should add a third hoop to the court.

Really? Doubt if Jerry West would say that of Dr J.

Why is it when anyone discusses the NBA, they either make the assertion that the players are all "thugs" or they bring up how much money they make? Are people REALLY that jealous?

You say revial, then list a bunch of names nobody wants to see. Put the big names in the game and make it HORSE style slam dunk.
