Woman crowdfunds homeless man's ticket home

Woman Crowdfunds Homeless Man's Ticket Home
A thoughtful woman in London can now add 'philanthropist' to her resume after pulling off an incredible act of kindness.

Jenny Baker randomly met a 64-year-old homeless man named Michael one night while she was out in East London. When she got home she posted this message to crowdfunding site GoFundMe.com, explaining his story:

"He told me that he is 64 and came over to England with his mum for a better life. Unfortunately his mother passed away and he found himself homeless with no funds. He told me that all he wants more than anything in the world is to go back to Jamaica where he says he will be fine and happy again."

Baker's message spread across social media with the help of #GetMichaelHome on Twitter. She set the fund up on a Sunday with the goal of raising around $1,300 - and she raised it in ONE DAY. By the next week, donations had amounted to more than $14,000. She promised to give it all to Michael.

She tweeted that she tracked down Michael to relay the good news and use some of the money to set him up in a hostel with warm clothes and fresh toiletries.

Michael hasn't made it back to Jamaica yet. But Baker said she was meeting with the embassy this week for more advice on the best way to get him home and will use the funds to find Michael temporary accommodations until then.

Jenny Baker is a beautiful person and a real life angel.
The accomplishment to do this for someone, let a long a stranger is one of the greatest that I have heard. It just took a matter of hours to change a life. We should all be inspired to do good in the world.........even if it is a small thing. Just do!

She is a wonderful and loving person.

There is way too much of his story missing. He came to London with his "mum" for a better life, how long ago? How did he get there without a passport? How has he been living like this and for how long? How has he supported himself and for how long? Those answers would let her and anyone else know what is the problem and what is the truth!

The first thing that went thru my mind is "scam".

There are many ppl, including myself, that have received emails with very similar descriptions. "I am a single girl, live in UK with grandmother. Father died and left me considerable inheritance. But, I need funds to pay the lawyers to probate the will..."

Some others along the line. My other question is why hasn't the Jamaican Consulate done something or anything to help their own?

This is wonderful...and, another example of why unforced charity works so much better than government sponsored/run welfare. When charity is spontaneous, the giver gets to experience the joy of giving and receives gratitude from the recipient; while the recipient experiences the generosity of the giver and shows gratitude for the gift. No politicians are made rich and 100% of the money goes where it should. If we ended government welfare tomorrow, the world would be a much better place and fewer would go hungry or homeless.

Hope it all works out. can't think that every situation out there is a scam.
If she gets him the airline ticket and arranges everything herself with minimum cash in his hand but rather awaiting him in a trust fund woith a 3rd party to ensure he does proper with it...then it's a great story.
