The Country That Drinks The Most...

They party hard down in...South Korea?

We'll admit we didn't see this coming - the country that apparently drinks more hard liquor than any other nation is South Korea. (Via TIME)

That's according to data from global marketing research firm Euromonitor International.

Quartz breaks it down - South Koreans drink an average of 13.7 shots a week. And nobody else can even compare - Russia was in second with 6.3 shots per week.

Also in the top five were Thailand, Poland and Japan.

And The Daily Mail gives some insight - "South Korea's unparalleled liquor consumption is almost entirely down to the country's love for the fermented rice spirit Soju."

Drinking Soju is seen as a way of building friendship, especially after a long day's work in a country that works some of the longest hours in the world.

Although Gawker points out that Soju's alcohol content is only 20 percent, while vodka's is 40. So South Korea might be drinking more liquid, but Russians are getting more bang for their buck.

As for the United States - 10th place, with 3.3 shots per week.

Well, if you had a nut job in the country next to you, kidnapping your citizens, threatening to Nuke you all the time, you might drink a lot too!

Stupid article
In S. Korea a shot is 60 ml. 40 proof means 20% alcohol or 12 ml alcohol per shot.
In Russia it's 50 ml per shot. 80 proof means 40% alcohol or 20 ml per shot.
That's less than 2 shots difference between the two once you do the equivalence conversion. It's even less if you're talking about 100 proof.

It's not necessarily the quantity of drinks, but the quality. The Germans. in my opinion, brew the best beer in the world, but Old Crow (Kentucky Bourbon Whisky) is the best in the galaxy at 85% proof. Makes Soju and Vodka look very, very, very weak in comparison.

My son teaches in S. Korea and says that the guys get smashed every night after work, the food is awesome and taxi drivers are insulted if you put on your seat belt.

Haiti, 1969. Only take taxi with certain color paint stripe on front bumper. These are the ones that carry insurance, the rest of them are kamikaze drivers. Yeah, what a fun weekend that was.................

If you lived on one of those places, you'd probably want a good stiff drink a bit more often too.
