A Massachusetts woman was arrested earlier this week after allegedly racking up a taxi fare so high she couldn't afford to pay it.
Thirty-one-year-old Denise Rebelato was arrested Wednesday after hailing a cab at New York's JFK Airport and getting a ride all the way to the Boston area. (Via WFXT)
WHDH points out the cabby told Rebelato it would cost nearly $1,000 to get to Framingham from New York and she agreed to pay it when they left the airport.
But after the roughly 200-mile journey, the New York Post reports Rebelato couldn't get the money to pay for the trip - meaning the driver still hasn't gotten paid. He says he spent $75 on gas and $40 in tolls in addition to the $150 he spent to rent the cab for a shift.
Taking a four-hour cab ride sounds a bit unusual, right?
Well apparently, it might not be all that uncommon. A New York Daily News reporter said she called several cab companies asking for rides from New York to Boston to see how much they were, and people on the other line didn't sound surprised at all.
WBZ-TV reports Rebelato was formally charged with larceny in a Massachusetts court Friday.
And WABC points out the judge wasn't sure why Rebelato didn't just take the bus - a much cheaper option - instead.
According to the New York Post, charges against Rebelato will be dropped if she can pay off her massive bill by April 7.
i bet the sorry gal stiffs him on the tip too,,,
She could had just bought a commercial ticket from NY to MA; She was already there at the airport. Wait for a stand by ticket or just make a purchase for a seat available from any airlines. She could had saved in lots of ways; money, and time in traveling to MA, the hassle does not even sounds worth doing this. Something is wrong with her..
How incredibly stupid do you have to be, to take a cab from NY to Boston?
Cab drivers are not always the most honest people. I had one quote me $12 to take me about 4 miles, he wanted to charge me $42. I called the police, and basically was told I had to pay the $42. I did, but have never trusted cabs in the US again. I write any quote down on paper and make them sign it, or don't get in the cab. And I still tip good cabbies. Other countries have never been a problem. I wouldn't be so quick to take a cabbies word on this though, Just sayin'...
Luckily, I've never had to take a cab in the US. I avoid them as if they radioactive. I don't have a high opinion of cabies either.
Cab Driver should have collected in advance, I rode cab from N C to Panama City, Fl in 1990 and paid $450. in advance, had no problems
You could have flown for less.
But she didn't fly. Duuuuhhh.
It would have been cheaper to rent a car.
But she didn't rent a car. Duuuuhhhh!
WHAT? NO TIP?
both of them sound pretty stupid to me
What that young lady did was wrong. But you can bet your sweet bippy that more cab drivers than not, have taken advantage of their fares, by going that extra distance or rigging the mileage indicators or taken the scenic route. Dog eat world out there.
........go, keep her in jail, have her pay the cabby and also charge her another 2g's for the cabby troubles............
