Heidi Kloser, American Freestyle Skier, Pulls Out Of 2014 Olympics After Breaking Leg

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) - American Heidi Kloser had to pull out of the Olympics after injuring her right leg during a training run before moguls qualifying.

Kloser tore knee ligaments and broke her femur following a crash Thursday night, only moments before she was supposed to head to the starting gate.

Kloser's father, Mike, posting on his Facebook page, said Heidi asked him if he still considered her an Olympian even though she didn't make it to the starting line in her first games.

"We said, of course she is," Mike Kloser wrote.

The 21-year-old Kloser was fourth in the World Cup standings coming into the Olympics.

Poor kid.

Whether we personally like or dislike the circs underlying the Sochi Winter Olympics is irrelevant.

No reasonable person can overlook the amount of time, energy and $$$ Heidi and her family have invested in this opportunity that she and they will never see bear deserved fruit...

Everyone has been saying how dangerous the tracks are. I'm sad to see an injury so soon, and sadly I expect this is going to be one of many,

Wow, very reminiscent of the odd story of Larry Yount, older brother of baseball HOFer Robin Yount. Google it for details.

Hope everyone is safe and has a great time. I think the country has done a great deal to host these Olympic Games and I for one am absolutely "NOT" going to insult them or their efforts. Relax and enjoy the games my fellow Americans. Sorry for the broken leg young lady and hope you heal soon as good as new. God Bless you.

So Sorry. Never doubt the you are an Olympian, Heidi.. The race does not make you an Olympian. It is all your hard work and success and making the 2014 olympic team....made you a true Olympian. Next time.. Don't Give Up. Pray that your recovery is a quick one and you will continue where you left off.

It would be scary for ME, being unfamiliar with circumstances and perhaps reality, to be in Russia needing the intensive, high-quality medical attention Heidi and others are going to need after [her] severe injury. It's going to be a long flight home, poor thing. My heart reaches out for this Olympian, her parents, family, friends and coaches! So much at stake, so quickly it vanished. Prayers for you, young one.
