Director Zhang Yimou pays $1.2M for having 3 kids

Germany China One Child Policy
BEIJING (AP) - Chinese authorities say film director Zhang Yimou and his wife have paid more than $1.2 million in fines for having three children in violation of China's strict family-planning rules.

A district of the eastern city of Wuxi said in an online notice that its family planning office on Friday received one lump-sum payment from Zhang and Chen Ting for the hefty fine.

Rumors became public last year that Zhang fathered more children than allowed by China's family-size policy that limits most urban families like his to one child. He agreed in December to cooperate with a government investigation.

Zhang is one of China's best-known directors with films such as "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers." He also designed the opulent opening and closing ceremonies for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

We need this here in the US. Too many people without food. And the best is always around Christmas time. Family with 8 kids doesn't have money for gifts. Please donate. Cracks me up every year.

I disagree, though I understand why you say it. The reason why I disagree is that I really do want Big Brother controlling our lives and well, that is what they're doing very slowly, but surely.

Also, the ones with MORE than one father..... now, that, I can see Welfare or Child Protection Services stepping in and saying, enough of that. We should NOT be supporting women who do this and get away with it and live on Welfare.

The answer is better job opportunities. A lot of working people are at or below the poverty line. Putting a limit on the number of kids an individual can have opens a dangerous can of worms.

Yep, dump your female babies off at fire station or street side and keep your male kids.

In a few more years, those remaining baby girls are going to be in high demand!

China has had these rules for decades, hardly "new meaning" for anyone who's ever read one word about China, welcome to the 1960's

This law, while having the intention of limiting population growth in urban areas, has created problems with abortion and illegal adoption of girl babies. Unfortunately the Chinese culture, like many others, puts more value on a male heir than a beautiful daughter. Culture will not change, so the law should.

I believe MR. ZHANG is the greatest living Director. See RAISE THE RED LANTERN and SHANGHAI TRIAD if you want to see two of his best works.

As for the fine, this is an excellent example of the power of the State under communism.

Really? The power of the state under communism? How about the power of our own government to wage a "war on drugs" that fills prisons to bursting with non-violent offenders? Wouldn't you call that an example of statist overkill. Consider also fines levied by the NBA and NFL. They're often enormous. China's a communist society in name only. Were it otherwise there'd be damned little free enterprise.

They're overpopulated with one species. A polluting one. China has too much carbon dioxide in atmosphere. Some time ago read of agroforestry, the Chinese more than two decades ago were doing some fantastic tree planting. Almost all roads had planted trees lined up two feet apart. A Chinese friend told us they were endeavoring to stop the use of chlorofluorocarbons. Practicing birth control is necessary one believes as scientists are telling us by 2060 or so we may have an unlivable planet.

Comes to mind, jensenge, .........democratic politics are dangerous because it leaves the decisions to the people, and if the populace doesn't practice common sense or virtue, if all citizens are not educated to be good.........we're in big trouble. Yup, we may have a rapid change coming, and terribly distressing to this one..plants and other animals cannot adapt! It's horrifying what will happen to much of life!

I wonder if Bill Gates will ever take up permanent residency in China? Would his vision of the world be more at home there?

We're, in the 20th and 21st century, being exposed to homosexuals. In the 30s this one didn't know they existed..lol. Hermaphroditic? Reading this a.m. Drehle's exhortation of "Time To Cull The Herd"..he, of course, referring to USA wildlife. Well, if homosexuals eventually have the ability to reproduce, God ...the truth, justice, and compassion... help us all! Isaac Asimov said it, five billion is enough!!! Listen to Einstein "dangerous is the fight against birth control, at a time (1954!) when overpopulation in various countries has become a serious threat to the health of people and a grave obstacle to any attempt to organize peace on the planet."

The whole World has but one problem, too many people. I have always thought the Chinese policy was just common sense . We will continue to slaughter each other in the name of religion or some other nonsense rather than manage the population . Tax robots as though they were people to pay SS and unemployment obligations . The Chinese are at least trying .

"...rather than manage the population." Such language was also in vogue as they rounded up the people with yellow stars in the Warsaw ghetto!

Dear Lord why didn't the US intervene! Horrible. The American holocaust was worse David Stannard tells us. Somewhere near one hundred million. This one agrees with Einstein...no full force combat, no WARS!

Agree. It's common sense. Knock off the horrific breeding of one species, and remember what Alan Durning told us, "consumption by the world's richest people is killing the Earth. Clearly, 1 billion profligate consumers are TOO much for the planet."
