Early start Thursday for Sochi Olympics Events

2014 Winter Olympics: What to Watch for

SOCHI, Russia (AP) -- Competition at the Sochi Olympics has begun, 32 hours before the opening ceremony.

Early starts are needed because of 12 men's and women's medal events added since the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Men's snowboard slopestyle qualifying runs - without American star Shaun White, who withdrew Wednesday - got underway Thursday 10 a.m. (0600 GMT) at X-Treme Park in the mountains above Sochi.

Women's qualifying runs were following in the afternoon, and women's moguls qualifying was scheduled to start freestyle skiing events at 6 p.m. (1400 GMT).

Men's slopestyle and women's moguls are among the first medals to be awarded Saturday.

Down in Sochi, the new team figure skating competition begins 7.30 p.m. (1530 GMT) at the Iceberg Skating Palace.

The men's short program is to be followed by the pairs.

Do you remember Munich? Was it in 1972? How the Israeli team was attacked and killed? The horror. They made a movie. Let' hope none of this nonsense happens this year. The athletes cannot afford to think about it. They concentrate only on their competition. Let'hope they will all stay safe.

Not so much into the Summer Olympics, but really looking forward to the Winter Olympics. Too bad Shaun White had to withdraw. I was hoping his injury wasn't that bad. Better luck next Olympics Shaun. Will be glued to my TV until the games are over and I'm not even a sports fan!
All the way USA!

He only withdrew from one event because the course was too dangerous.

I am very upset at the needless killing of stray dogs and cats at Sochi by the Russians. With all their wanting to be accepted on the world scene, why not catch and hold the dogs, neuter them and find them homes if possible, do we have to have an olympics atop the blood of innocent animals? Shame on them.

You know, the only difference between the way the Russians handle stray/feral dogs is the method of execution. They use a bullet and we use either lethal injection or gas. Here in the US we put down about 1.2 million strays/ferals every year. So how are we so much different than them?

Right! We should kill "human" beings who buy a pet and then decide "Oh, it's too much trouble" then shove it out the door. That'd reduce two excess populations and raise the general level of intelligence.

Why did Shaun White withdraw from the Snowboard Slope? Will he be in the regular snowboarding competition ?

We hope to see most of the Olympics and hope that they will show at least the top of each sport and not just the Americans. Athletes from the entire world are of interest.
