Sochi city hall orders killing of stray dogs

sochi road sign
SOCHI, Russia (AP) - A pest control company which has been killing stray dogs in Sochi for years says it has a contract to exterminate more of the animals throughout the Olympics.

Alexei Sorokin, director general of pest control firm Basya Services, says his company is involved in what he described as "catching and disposing" of dogs. Sorokin refused to specify whether they shoot or poison dogs or say where they take their corpses.

Sorokin says his company is doing an important job because thousands of stray dogs are roaming the streets of Sochi, some of them "biting children."

Sochi city hall pledged last year to build shelters for stray dogs.

Authorities across Russia have been rejecting calls to sterilize dogs instead of killing them as a humane way of dealing with the issue.

The same order was given for homeless people in Sochi. It's called the "Stalin Complex".

Their inhumane treatment of man's best friend is equal to their civil rights record. I say: BOYCOTT THE OLYMPICS.

yes - billybutt we do the same thing right here in the USA - been doing this for years - many many thousands of dogs and cats are killed by the exact organizations that take your money to care for them - there are just too many -- I and my fellow officers was given instructions to just shoot stray dogs years ago while on the police force ---- nothing new here -

Reminds me of the commander and sergeant major of rhe 1st bde 1st cav in 2004 at camp victory. They went through and took all the dogs troops had adopted and killed them. The unit vets could have vaccinated them easily and probably neutered them too, but nope! Kill them. As for wild dogs, we used to have wild dog round ups in Texas as abandoned dogs do form packs and attack llivestock and people -- you just have to clean them out. Same with a dog that kills chickens or sheep - you have to kill them as they do not change. Just the way it is.

I have asked myself the same thing...How could the committee choose this place out of all the places in the world? It is Russia....they are barbarians.....they do not value human life or choices...why would they value an animals life? I will not be watching at all either

What? That's a huge extrapolation and untrue. Who are you referring to...who puts lives of animals ahead of humans? AND haven't you ever seen the thousands of stories where animals come to the rescue of their owners or people not related to them...risking their own lives?

What, exactly, can one say here? I personally believe that if the world was not watching, these same idiots would exterminate and dispose of their "unwanted" people the same way. Irony playing a sad role once again here as unfortunately, the "animals" that are being disposed of are Far more humane and caring than the scumbag animals that are hunting and murdering them while calling it "important."

Yes, we are on the same page. We MUST continue speaking out against these inhumane practices...they DO translate to how we treat each other. I firmly believe that.

In my opinion, alot of European countries are backwards in their way of thinking and actions. Now all of a sudden with the Olympics a week or so away a mass destruction of stray dogs need to be done ! Countries need to make the people of these countries responsible owners as they are with their children ! But wait, some people don' take care of their children. It's just sickening that there is such little to no regard for animals. Seen the dogs hung from trees in Greece on facebook and aol, in fact different pictures and different animals. Every country has blame for the inhumane cruelty to animals and need to educate people about the rights of animals and how to care for them with sterilization. They don't even have the projects finished for the olympics so why would they build animal shelters ! The point is they don't give a ++it about animals!

I agree though even over here some associations have no regard for dogs i.e greyhounds as do Australia
China skin them alive and cook them alive, it is a terrible world we live in.

Well no, that isn't true. Unless you have traveled extensively as I have you wouldn't know that. Even in third world countries, there are many well educated and humane people. You saw dogs hung from trees in Greece? I traveled to Greece on business 3 times over an 18 month period and saw no such abuse. These kinds of untruths told on Facebook or the internet are not to be believed. Spreading these rumors is hugely destructive. The Greeks love their pets. There are many cats and dogs around the Acropolis treated with love and care. There are many such pets of the people roaming around..the leash laws are different. Yes there are also 'strays' just as we have strays in this country. Please don't spread rumors as facts. Very destructive.

I can tell you that they eat dog meat in the Phillipines! I served at Clark Air Base and lived in Angeles City for two years. Dog meat was available in the butcher shops and could even be purchased from street vendors. I had a German Sheppard as a watchdog during my tour of duty and as was the practice among military families, searched for a good military famlily to adopt him via the base newspaper prior to returning to the US. I did not realize that the locals working on base also read the base newspaper. That very day several families appeared at my front gate asking to purchase my dog. Thankfully my housekeeper understood the language and warned me not to sell my dog to them because they intended to eat him. That is not a rumor, that is a fact! "Sarge," ended up in a safe and loving military home.
