Sochi city hall orders killing of stray dogs

sochi road sign
SOCHI, Russia (AP) - A pest control company which has been killing stray dogs in Sochi for years says it has a contract to exterminate more of the animals throughout the Olympics.

Alexei Sorokin, director general of pest control firm Basya Services, says his company is involved in what he described as "catching and disposing" of dogs. Sorokin refused to specify whether they shoot or poison dogs or say where they take their corpses.

Sorokin says his company is doing an important job because thousands of stray dogs are roaming the streets of Sochi, some of them "biting children."

Sochi city hall pledged last year to build shelters for stray dogs.

Authorities across Russia have been rejecting calls to sterilize dogs instead of killing them as a humane way of dealing with the issue.

Why is this an issue for the Olympics? In Austin, Texas, stray dogs are euthanized within 72 hours if they are not claimed. This city law is comparable to laws throughout the U.S. Readers who are weeping because of the cruelty of the Russians need to realize what's happening. Lacking creativity, the media reports on the few stories that have been passed on and on and on. Stray dogs. Three percent of hotels not finished. Snowden lives in Russia. Some reporters got through Customs with liquids! Woohoo. This is not reporting about the Olympics-- and we are the poorer for it. Complain about something important, not trivia!

Can Russia possibly do or say anymore to make me not want to go there. I love the olympics, but this is the first time I have a ugly feeling about them.

The US is no better. There are thousands of stray dogs and cats picked up daily. What do you really tihink what happens to them after there week to ten days at the rescue shelter. And it's not rescuing them that's for sure...
