Hotels fall victim to credit card breach

It's a troubling time for thousands of credit and debit card users.

The latest breach affects customers of White Lodging, a company that manages the Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton and Westin hotel franchises.

The same security researcher who first reported the recent Target breach says the hotel data hack affected only specific hotels in Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles. The breach of security took place between March 23, 2013 and the end of last year.

It's unknown if the Target and hotel breaches are related, but this feels like deja vu.

Both Neiman Marcus and Michael's have also been victims of security breaches.

All the recently hacked companies have offered a year of free credit monitoring, but details about the White Lodging breach are currently unknown.

Many are now pushing for new safety measures, such as the successful EMV chip technology Europe has been using. In the US, retailers are advocating for all credit card transactions to require a pin.

White Lodging says it is working with banks and credit card companies as it investigates the problem.
