Russia: Two suspects arrested in suicide bombing

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia's counterterrorism agency on Thursday identified the two suicide bombers who struck the southern city of Volgograd and announced the arrest of two suspected accomplices.

The bombings of a train station and trolley bus in Volgograd in late December, which killed 34 people and wounded many more, heightened security fears before the Winter Olympics in Sochi, which start next week.

The suspected bombers, Asker Samedov and Suleiman Magomedov, were members of a terrorist group based in Dagestan, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said.

Two brothers, Magomednabi and Tagir Batirov, were detained as suspected accomplices Wednesday in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim republic that has become the center of an Islamic insurgency. The brothers were believed to have helped the suicide bombers travel to Volgograd, about 650 kilometers (400 miles) to the north, the agency said in a statement.

Investigators were still trying to determine who had organized the attack, the statement said.

An Islamic jihadist group in Dagestan posted a video this month purporting to show the two suicide bombers speaking to the camera before the Volgograd attacks and threatening to strike Sochi, where the Winter Games will be held Feb. 7-23.

The men were identified only as Suleiman and Abdurakhman. There has been no confirmation that the Suleiman in the video is the man named by the counter-terrorism agency or that either of the men carried out the suicide bombings.

The video was released by the Vilayat Dagestan, one of the units that make up the Caucasus Emirate, an umbrella group for militants seeking to establish an independent Islamic state in Russia's North Caucasus. The volatile region, a patchwork of ethnic republics, is located just to the east of Sochi.

Doku Umarov, a Chechen warlord who leads the emirate, had ordered a halt to attacks on civilian targets in 2012. But he rescinded that order in July, urging his followers to strike the Sochi Olympics, which he denounced as "satanic dances on the bones of our ancestors."

When the Russian (KGB) investigators get through with the 'suspects' they will either sing like canaries or wind up in a forgotten prison pounding rocks. If you think Gitmo was bad for the suspected terrorists, you ain't seen nothing.................

I have never thought Gitmo was bad. In fact, I think it's far more deluxe than they deserve. And, to make matters worse, they are eating better than our troops fighting terrorists. And playing soccer on a brand new court built with our tax dollars. They have prayer rugs and Korans. If you were a prisoner in one of the countries these detainees are from, what do you think you'd get?

Even IF we all converted to Islam, they still wouldn't be happy. LIke Christians, they fight among themselves. Unlike Christians in modern times, these seem to think killing other will get them what they want. Some don't even know what they want. They just want gloery in Paradise. How selfish to kill others for Allah just to serve their selves.

Not until you get ALL the information from them. Does Russia have an ACLU that would stop them from waterboarding these two poor souls?

I do not sympathize with what you call "poor souls." If they're guilty, they helped kill 34 people.

Have no sympathy for cowards like these bastards who kill totally innocent people trying to get across their message of horror and the disregard for human life. Hang them by the balls with piano wire from the highest tree.

Really. Putin being a former KGB agent has a lot of experience in getting information from people. And Russia does not have the same constitution we have. I have seen videos of Russian police making an arrest. Rodney King had it easy.

Except for people screwing it up, Dagestan would be a very nice place. Decent climate, gorgeous scenery--and a dangerous heterogeny of people. Whew. Every ethnicity in that part of the world is mixed up in Dagestan, and religions you haven't ever heard of all butting heads. There is probably an economic or strategic reason Russia is holding onto this train wreck. Oh--it borders Iran. Maybe that's why.

Save your breath ole buddy. The left wing liberals are not going to allow anything real to be done. Don't they know the fundamentalists will not be bought off by the elite of say, Hollywood, haha, but they will not be targeted until they no longer support the cause, so to speak. The special interests liberals and the politicians that try so hard to keep them in their camps will be a costly situation in the long run. This country had better wake up and wake up soon, and really fight the war on terrror, or 9/11 will look like a small incident one of these days
