Suspect charged with murder in SC campus shooting

19-Year-Old Suspect Arrested In S.C. State Shooting

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - A suspect was arrested early Saturday and charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a student outside a dormitory at South Carolina State University, law enforcement officials said.

Justin Bernard Singleton, 19, of Charleston, was arrested just after midnight at the parking lot of an apartment complex in Orangeburg, where the campus is located, said Thom Berry, a public information officer with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

He was charged with murder in the death of 20-year-old Brandon Robinson, according to a news release from law enforcement. Singleton was being held at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center.

Robinson died Friday afternoon after he was shot outside Hugine Suites.

Authorities initially said they were looking for four men who had left campus. Berry said there was no ongoing safety concern for the community but declined to say whether there was still an active manhunt.

"At this time, we believe we have the individual who fired the shot," Berry told The Associated Press early Saturday.

Authorities decided to lock down the campus so that whoever was responsible for the shooting could not return, University Police Chief Mernard Clarkson said Friday. The lockdown was lifted Friday evening.

Clarkson said police haven't figured out what led to the shooting.

The shooting shocked the entire campus, university President Thomas Elzey said. Grief counselors were being brought in to talk to students and staff.

"We, again, are extraordinarily sad about this. He was a very nice young man. And it hurts. It hurts us all," Elzey said.

Elzey said South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley offered any help the school needed.

South Carolina State also was the site of a fatal shooting in 2011, when police said three men met on campus for a drug deal. A student, 22-year-old Jonathan Bailey, was killed.

Friday's fatal shooting happened three days after authorities said a Purdue University student shot and stabbed a fellow student to death in a classroom.

South Carolina State University is a historically black university with about 3,200 students in Orangeburg, about 40 miles south of Columbia.

No howlter we should all pay for our own mistakes. Just like we should all pay for our own food, clothing, housing, children and so on...(unless you are physically unable). So we can pass on to our children to be proud and about becoming responsible adults, and about giving and providing, instead of taking! Instead of looking for someone else to raise us...like the taxpayers!
I wonder if Justin had a job or was in school trying to get ahead!
May Brandon Robinson's family find comfort with each other...stay strong!
As you mentioned "talk the talk or walk the walk"

Look at the crap that is a basic menu for today's young america:..... shoot em up and violent fantasy movies by the score. Ragged jeans rock groups doing grotesque manouvres..... Jerky jiggles in lieu of dancing routines......creating noise and fireworks as substitutes for talent to entertain drunken niutwits.... explosions..... mayhem rap-crap to replace melody.... Role models like the current crop of "entertaiment" misfits

Out of such endless chaos you expect culture to thrive ???? THINK AGAIN DREAMER

Generally, these types of shootings are drug related. Shootings on school campuses are generally because they are gun free zones and very soft target areas. Add to that, the 40 years of indoctrination by public school system and poverty pimps promoting an ideology for personal wealth and gains, and society is a train wreck in process. 40 years of high rates of single women pregnancy rates just compound the problems. When will people get tired of the crap and decide to confront the failed policies of the last 60 years??? My guess is that too many are now imbedded in the indoctrination and are clueless of the basis of the problems. It will only continue to get worse.

People that kill innocent people sholud be executed within 24 hours after being caught. The same way animals are put down when they kill people......I know now tell me how many innocent people are in jail!If a killer is caught and authority knows for sure they have the right person... EXECUTE!! Stricter gun laws are not the answer, and anyone that thinks that would work in this country lives in a bubble. For God sake think about it. No superhero is going to show up to protect good people we have to protect ourselves.Much stricter laws when the evil element is caught. The scum that commits these crimes were in jail and should have stayed there, but got out to continue their way of life.Hurting and killing innocent people. Thank all the judges and lenient laws that allow this to continue!!!

A black man in South Georgia was telling tales to his friends about his married white girlfriend. One day a white man came home unexpectedly and discovered his wife in bed with a this same black man. Their clothes were neatly arranged where they had taken them off, the woman had a pistol in a bedside table. and there were no cries of distress coming from the bedroom when the husband opened the door. Upon seeing her husband the woman began screaming "Rape!" The black man was arrested, and after a "fair" trial one could be assured a black man accused of raping a married white woman in Southern Georgia could expect, he was executed. The level of this man's guilt rose to what you propose, that of "authority knows for sure they have the right person." We make our decision to execute someone go through multiple levels of scrutiny to try and prevent things like this. DNA has proven the innocence of untold numbers of murderers, rapists and the like when "authority knows for sure they have the right person." Even with the system we have we still manage to execute innocent people, and you want to remove some of those safeguards to execute more people who are "known by the authorities" to be guilty? How about reading some of the case studies of the cases overturned with the help of The Innocent Project and similar groups, then see if you still want to employ a system more closely aligned with the Chinese method.

A 19 year with a hand gun ? How can that be didn't we pass laws outlawing possession of a handgun for anyone under the age of 21 ? Hey we can't keep drugs out of prisons but we continue to pass more laws. Think we are way overdue in rethinking many situations folks. .......... The other day Texas executed a person for killing a police officer and it only took 20 yrs after he was convicted HELLO
