Suspect charged with murder in SC campus shooting

19-Year-Old Suspect Arrested In S.C. State Shooting

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - A suspect was arrested early Saturday and charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a student outside a dormitory at South Carolina State University, law enforcement officials said.

Justin Bernard Singleton, 19, of Charleston, was arrested just after midnight at the parking lot of an apartment complex in Orangeburg, where the campus is located, said Thom Berry, a public information officer with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

He was charged with murder in the death of 20-year-old Brandon Robinson, according to a news release from law enforcement. Singleton was being held at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center.

Robinson died Friday afternoon after he was shot outside Hugine Suites.

Authorities initially said they were looking for four men who had left campus. Berry said there was no ongoing safety concern for the community but declined to say whether there was still an active manhunt.

"At this time, we believe we have the individual who fired the shot," Berry told The Associated Press early Saturday.

Authorities decided to lock down the campus so that whoever was responsible for the shooting could not return, University Police Chief Mernard Clarkson said Friday. The lockdown was lifted Friday evening.

Clarkson said police haven't figured out what led to the shooting.

The shooting shocked the entire campus, university President Thomas Elzey said. Grief counselors were being brought in to talk to students and staff.

"We, again, are extraordinarily sad about this. He was a very nice young man. And it hurts. It hurts us all," Elzey said.

Elzey said South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley offered any help the school needed.

South Carolina State also was the site of a fatal shooting in 2011, when police said three men met on campus for a drug deal. A student, 22-year-old Jonathan Bailey, was killed.

Friday's fatal shooting happened three days after authorities said a Purdue University student shot and stabbed a fellow student to death in a classroom.

South Carolina State University is a historically black university with about 3,200 students in Orangeburg, about 40 miles south of Columbia.

you can take a person out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the person.

to think parents of students at many universities, and even the students themselves, believe they are safe in school when student thugs like the SC shooter and others like the florida rapist/heisman trophy awardee walk college grounds and mingle with students every day. there were such types in my college, and at a nearby state college, who made the local news with horrific crimes.

there was a small jail at the top of a multy-story building that also housed the city court house across the street from my college. the roof of the building was the jail's fenced exercise yard. prisoners could be seen looking down at the small college campus, and probably at the female students walking to and from their cars below. a professor told her female students to be careful, because a young female student was kidnapped in broad daylight, whusked away in a car, and raped by a group of thugs. they were probably released prisoners who committed the crime.

I told the professor that the prisoners above were probably scoping out cars and people to commit crimes upon to associates below, and that the guards should block the view of the prisoners with something. days later, a tarp was wrapped around the rooftop jail yard; thereby, preventing any prisoners from assisting in crimes below from above.

colleges should force students to undergo a strict criminal and medical background check, to help prevent violence on campus.

I was raised in the ghetto. I'm college educated, I have a job and an apartment. Never been arrested, no criminal record what so ever. I find your comments ignorant and offensive.

it's great to see our republican gov NIKKI HALEY is "offering any help the school needed" next she may propose that to keep the students safe , all students should carry conceled weapons. there is a bill that is on her desk now that will allow conceled weapons in restaurants & BARS. I'M SORRY-- if a patron of a restaurant or bar is carrying , they can't have any drinks . who is going to moniter that? i hope our gov. will attend the funerals of the innocent people killed by this republican bill !!!

A 19 year with a hand gun ? How can that be didn't we pass laws outlawing possession of a handgun for anyone under the age of 21 ? Hey we can't keep drugs out of prisons but we continue to pass more laws. Think we are way overdue in rethinking many situations folks. .......... The other day Texas executed a person for killing a police officer and it only took 20 yrs after he was convicted HELLO

Look at the crap that is a basic menu for today's young america:..... shoot em up and violent fantasy movies by the score. Ragged jeans rock groups doing grotesque manouvres..... Jerky jiggles in lieu of dancing routines......creating noise and fireworks as substitutes for talent to entertain drunken niutwits.... explosions..... mayhem rap-crap to replace melody.... Role models like the current crop of "entertaiment" misfits

Out of such endless chaos you expect culture to thrive ???? THINK AGAIN DREAMER
