'Today' names Des Moines the wealthiest American city

'TODAY' Names Des Moines Wealthiest American City

If you're looking to relocate somewhere new, you might want to listen up. 'Today' featured America's wealthiest city, and it's one you might not expect.

Yup, not Manhattan, Miami, or even Silicon Valley. It's Des Moines, Iowa.

In the past, the capital of Iowa has been declared the best place for business and careers by Forbes.
Kiplinger also called it the best city for families.

Back in 2011, U.S. News & World Report ranked Des Moines No. 1 among the richest metro areas. The capital of Iowa has the highest median income in the nation relative to the cost of living.

KCCI points out that the definition of rich depends on one's perspective.

Still, residents tell "Today' that living in a Midwestern city of only half a million people, is, well, priceless.

'Today' also reports that the cost of living in Des Moines is actually 10 percent lower than the national average.

make fun! This is paradise! Rush hour is 20 minutes(30 minutes in the winter). Real estate is cheap. we have nice, trouble free schools. And people are nice here.

Well in New York City we get to spit on each other. Also we get to curse each other out and fight with everyone for fun. If nobody is around and we think we can get away with it we will shoot you too.

Well, They do have a 15 minute rush hour on most afternoons and the city is not known for keeping their streets maintained .Pot holes are numerous ,but the auto body shops and the auto mechanics make a thriving living ,repairing fender benders and wheel alignments . Make sure you check their real estate taxes before buying .

Do you think we'll ever do away with real estate taxes? They are totally unfair. . and a horrible way to fund schools

A rush hour that lasts only 15 min, is a plus. In many cities it lasts well over an hour, if not two hours. Pot holes well, I've driven in many other cities and they all have pot holes. In Iowa there may be more damage done to vehicles due to the wildlife that you will hit even in cities. This winter during the Cedar Rapids deer hunt over 150 deer were taken. Of course yesterday the temp that was below zero even before you factored in the wind chill was bone chilling (I have previously broken an arm and a leg, and even inside I could feel the cold). It is a matter of choice what you can live with and what you can't.

I think we should all just simply say: Congratulations, Des Moines!
