Dolphins Steal Show At Surfing Competition

Surfers are pretty amazing to watch, but unexpected guests stole the show at a surfing competition in Santa Barbara over the weekend.

While surfers did their thing, a pod of dolphins rode the waves with them. They had the crowd in the palm of their ... uh, flippers.

You can hear their amazement in this video uploaded to YouTube. 'Here we go. They are right there waiting. There they go. Woah! Look at that! Oh man!'

There were about a dozen dolphins hanging ten. KGO-TV reports it's very rare to see dolphins - especially this many dolphins - joining in with the surfers. Talk about a sight to see.

Seeing these dolphins, which are normally so friendly to human beings, and knowing how they're slaughtered in the Japanese dolphin roundups, is enough to break your heart. Japan, you've successfully changed your image, I think, from that of the imperialistic, and warlike people you appeared to be during World War II. But killing whales and dolphins, over fishing tuna, and, if I'm not mistaken, cutting the fins off sharks and leaving them to suffer and die, while most of the world is trying now to understand the life cycles of the inhabitants of the sea, and how a healthy balance of undersea life interacts, and prevent the wanton destruction of our oceans, doesn't speak well for your country. You, as a highly educated, technologically superior nation, should be leading the world in championship of sound husbandry of our oceans. Sometimes old traditions have to be left behind for the sake of the greater, long term good.

Ohhh Nooo! Amazing...That was a mile from my house and we couldn't get a parking space because Rincon Classic planners didnt plan for shuttle buses from Carpinteria...and higway patrol was busy writing tickets for people who had to park on the freeway offramp. Next year, I'll walk!

KGO-TV reports its rare to see dolphins joining in...? If KGO-TV actually surfed they'd know it happens often. Dolphins are always out there riding waves with surfers along the California coast lines, Santa Barbara included.
