2014 Newport Jazz Festival lineup announced

Trombone Shorty and others to play 60th Newport Jazz Festival

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Wynton Marsalis, Bobby McFerrin and Dr. John are among dozens of artists set to perform at a Rhode Island festival that's showcased a who's who of jazz stars since 1954.

The Newport Jazz Festival is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Festival creator George Wein announced this year's lineup on Tuesday.

The festival runs Aug. 1-3 and will include performances from Trombone Shorty, David Sanborn and Gregory Porter. It'll get started at Fort Adams State Park with up-and-coming jazz artists.

An opening night concert at the International Tennis Hall of Fame will feature the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Marsalis and Dee Dee Bridgewater with a salute to Billie Holiday. The festival continues at Fort Adams the next two days.

Good question. He is among the greatest. He's still active, at age 70.

Unfortunately, jazz artists have to eat. And jazz as a genre doesn't really haul the mail like it used to. Clubs have folded almost everywhere, mainly victims of the tobacco police and draconian drunk driving laws. You can make the same argument about blues outside of a few dedicated cities. That and the audience aged. Sigh.

Don't see JaRon Eames on your list.
He sings, promotes Jazz on a cable show and has written supar boo on Jazz.
