Comet-chasing probe sends signal to Earth

Europe Comet Chaser

BERLIN (AP) - A comet-chasing space probe that has been in hibernation for almost three years has woken up and sent its first signal back to Earth.

The European Space Agency received the all-clear message "Hello World!" from its Rosetta spacecraft some 800 million kilometers (500 million miles) away shortly after 7 p.m. (1800 GMT; 1 p.m. EST).

Rosetta was put into hibernation in 2011 to conserve energy for its long journey to meet with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

If all goes as planned the probe will rendezvous with the comet in the coming months and drop a lander onto its icy surface in November.

I wish I could wake up that easily. I wonder what they will find? Maybe ice?

They will find Barack Obama. His policies and stimulus packages are out there in space. Must be that marijuana he claims he smoked as a teen and in college.

Terrific, just we need, a rendezvous with a comet! All that money could have been used to help starving Americans, and to help Americans that can't afford their medications! I know a woman that has to suplement her diet with cat food, so I help her out when I can! I got a whopping $24 a month COLA! Big deal! I remember when the USA was the best country in the world! Not any more! So sad!..........

What a waist of time and money, to land on a frozen piece of dirt. I would have sent the idiots some frozen dirt for free and they could have used the money to feed the poor or lower the cost of meds.

You sound like a real genius. You probably have several PhD's in physics and astro physics.

Waist is the distance around your belly. Waste was the price of your education.

If all goes well, and I hope it does, it will be a monumental task and the individuals that love space and our Earth will pay close attention. Good luck. The long journey will be one for the history books.
