Heat wave hits Australian Open

Scorching temperatures at the Australian Open thinned crowds at Melbourne Park and prompted players to pile bags of ice on their heads and necks between points.

Here's a look at how players and fans tried to beat the heat on Tuesday.

Oh no! Don't tell the Republicans there is global warming and that the U.S. isn't the only country on earth.

Interesting idea, ammonia, but what are the exact proportions? How much ammonia would go into how much water? ( A "bucket" is a rather vague measure). Also, would this mixture be any more effective than simply splashing on ice water? I've played tennis in very hot weather, and believe me, it's debilitating, even dangerous. I would much rather play in the cold.

This is NOT your typical household ammonia. This is Spirits of Ammonia(pharmaceutical)! The bottle is typically 3-6 ounces. A bucket can be the 1 gallon or 5 gallon. If you use a 1 gallon bucket you would only need to use 1.5-3 ounces of the spirits of ammonia. For a 5 gallon bucket use 6 ounces of the spirits of ammonia. This is an old timey remedy. Most folks under the age of 45 would not have a clue as to what I'm talking about. You use to be able to buy Spirits of Ammonia at the pharmacies, but now I can only find it online. It's great for soaking a towel in the water then draping it over your head. This stuff stays ice cold for hours w/o needing bags of ICE added to it.

It wasn't an Equatorial Vortex was it? Why does it always have to get hot in the summer?

Don't you think it would of been a good idea to mention how hot instead of showing sweaty tennis players? Lousy reporting.
