Fidel Castro makes 1st public appearance in 9 months

HAVANA (AP) - Former President Fidel Castro made his first public appearance in nine months, attending the opening of an art studio in the Cuban capital.

Official newspapers and websites on Thursday carried a photo showing a seated, gray-haired Castro from behind, pointing at a work of art while artist Alexis Leyva leans in to talk to him at the Wednesday night event. Cuban state television also broadcast video of the encounter on the afternoon news.

Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia published three other pictures on its website that showed Castro's face. Wearing a black jacket and green scarf on a cool Havana evening, Castro reaches out to touch a sculpture in one of the images.

Castro last appeared in public on April 9, 2013, when he attended the inauguration of Havana school.

In December he met privately with visiting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, a key ally of Cuba.

Castro, 87, led Cuba for 48 years before falling gravely ill in July 2006 and handing over power to his brother Raul, who formally became president in January 2008.

The island nation of Cuba has existed from all accounts providing it's citizens a certain amount of freedom to live their lives unencumbered by a brutal dictatorial regime detractors seem to believe is still in place. The people have survived and prospered from what they had to make do. The important question is how much of the communist-doctrine is still in place that will hinder future relations with the US when the Castro brothers are gone, and who are the leaders of tomorrow?

Cuba has just allowed some to buy new cars for the first time since the 1950's. That's only because they can no longer keep the old ones going.

Hundreds of thousands have attempted to escape Cuba. We got 125,000 in the Mariel Boat Lift. They didn't leave because Cuba is a paradise.

It's obvious you have no clue!!! So it's better you remain silent.

The Castros will be replaced by more Castros, nephews, kids, grandkids, the only way Cuba will ever be free is by force from the inside.

Does anyone have any count on the number of people murdered by this Marxist-Leninist dictator? I wonder if the number is more or less than the number of progressive liberals and leftist-democrats in the United States who have idealized his totalitarian system of government because it forces equality for people who could not experience it on their merits and provides centralized bureaucratic health care while they conveniently ignore the political prisons and executions.

They aren't so much progressive liberals and leftist democrats as they are delusional and unbalanced.

"Oh, lucky, lucky us! We've been cut off from the rest of the world and living in tropical slums for the past 50 years or so, thanks to El Gran Lider! Socialism is el mejor!" Watch out, fellow Americans, this could happen to us.

We Americans have a short memory. I remember the day when my father took us on vacation to New York.
On a Friday afternoon I will never forget watching thousands of New Yorkers give this guy a ticket tape parade complete with marching bans, parade of politicians and hundreds of Cubans in tow.

This of course was after we spent millions to aid his fledging revolution to overthrow Bautista who the US had lost favor with because he was cuddling our gangsters with legal gambling, prostitution and refusing to extradite gay suspects on Hoovers secret "arrest" list.

That Castro came back to "bite the hand of his US master" is really nothing new..
Remember:
Shaw of Iran
Allende
Pinoche
Noriega....and the list goes one. As long as they behave we keep them in power, however "he who giveth, can also take away"

We don't have a short memory, its just that our government has made some really poor choices for short term gain.
