Bullock sweeps people's choice awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Sandra Bullock cleaned up at the 40th annual People's Choice Awards, taking home four trophies as the evening's top winner.

Bullock was named favorite movie, comedic and dramatic actress, and she shared the favorite movie duo award with "Gravity" co-star George Clooney.

Fans deemed Ellen DeGeneres their favorite daytime TV host, making her the woman who has won the most People's Choice Awards with a total of 14 trophies.

"Iron Man 3" scored three awards including Robert Downey Jr.'s nod as favorite action movie star. Justin Timberlake also nabbed three prizes, and the cast of "The Big Bang Theory" was named favorite TV comedy.

Jennifer Hudson received the humanitarian award for her work with children.

"2 Broke Girls" stars Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs hosted the show at the Nokia Theatre.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

The fans made their top picks in television, music and film at the 2014 People's Choice Awards and deemed Ellen DeGeneres their favorite daytime TV host, making her the woman with the most People's Choice honors - a total of 14 trophies.

"As a young girl growing up in New Orleans, if anyone would have told me I was going to win 14 People's Choice Awards, I ... I mean 12, yes. Thirteen? Maybe. But 14?" joked DeGeneres, who said she wanted to make "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" the show for everyone - old, young, black, white, gay or straight.

"As a matter of fact, just yesterday I was talking to this lovely African-American woman and she told me she was single and she works 80 hours a week to get by and she looked forward to coming home every night and watching me, and that woman's name is Oprah Winfrey. I think I am doing something right."

The show kicked off Wednesday night with Sandra Bullock receiving the award for favorite movie actress.

Presented the award by fellow actor Sean Hayes, Bullock said, "I know this looks like I spent lonely Friday nights just voting for myself, but I didn't. An actor can't do what they do without hundreds of amazing people working for them, with them, alongside them." She went on to thank her "The Heat" co-star, Melissa McCarthy, the crew of her hit space film "Gravity" and her son, Louis.

"The Heat" was chosen as favorite comedic movie.

Justin Timberlake picked up an award for favorite album, "The 20/20 Experience." He thanked his "beautiful wife," Jessica Biel, "for teaching me patience and the little things like just putting the dishes in the dishwasher. It goes a long way. Fellas, you're welcome."

A pregnant Drew Barrymore, who joked that DeGeneres had called her fat backstage, presented her "Blended" co-star, Adam Sandler, with the comedic movie actor award.

After debuting her talk show "The Queen Latifah Show" in 2013, fans crowned Queen Latifah their favorite new talk show host.

The star-studded show featured appearances by Jessica Alba, Heidi Klum, Zac Efron, Anna Faris and Michael B. Jordan.

Sara Bareilles performed her hit "Brave," and country star Brad Paisley took the stage to sing "The Mona Lisa."

Hosts Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs kicked off the show with a gut-busting set of wisecracks. Dennings' dry delivery cutely blended with the Behrs' quirky disposition, making the stars of hit show "2 Broke Girls" a savvy riot.

Dennings joked, "She's the Hathaway, I'm the Franco," in reference to Anne Hathaway and James Franco, who hosted the Academy Awards in 2011.

With help from fellow actors Ian Somerhalder, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Arsenio Hall, Ian Ziering, Kaley Cuoco and Christina Aguilera, Dennings and Behrs, who play waitresses on their show, took the orders of some of these nominees for a hilarious introductory skit.

The People's Choice Awards are broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Leaving "Gravity" I felt like I had been sitting the tensed up for the entire time....And I found out I was not the only one. Beautiful scenery, I felt I was in space. Great story line, and I enjoy a show (gravity, Game of Thrones, walking dead) that is not afraid to kill off a character. Truly enjoyed the film.

I agree with Pat: Sandra and Ellen are both great women, and I'm glad Queen Latifah's new show is getting a nod too. I haven't seen it, but I like her style.

Saw the Heat - had to be one of the worst films I have seen in over a decade. Right up there with Surf Nazis Must Die. I guess Bullock cannot do anything wrong in some eyes.

Who could blame you? I'm a straight female and I'm slightly in love with her myself, laugh.

Ellen DeGeneres is the ultimate underdog-comeback girl, and she is my hero! Let's hear it, for strong, brave, talented, under-rated women everywhere.

Kudos to the winners of the PCA's this year. I want to thank those in the winner's spotlights for their modesty and appreciation of those teams of people who provided you with their expertise and dedication to make such memorable moments in Art.

When all the pieces of your creativity are woven together with individual dignity, an organically beautiful masterpiece is created and you gift the audience with beauty. Thank you all.
