Indonesia rumbling volcano unleashes fresh burst

Indonesian Volcano Erupts, Forces More Residents to Flee

KARO, Indonesia (AP) - A rumbling volcano in western Indonesia that has been spewing lava and clouds of gas high into the sky let out a new, powerful burst Tuesday, prompting warnings for airplanes and triggering panic among villagers, officials said.

Nine eruptions Tuesday sent lava and searing gas tumbling out of Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province, said Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. The volcano started spitting clouds of gas and lava as high as 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) in the air late Monday, but no casualties were reported.

He said more than 19,000 people have been evacuated from villages in a danger zone 5 kilometers (3 miles) around the crater to temporary shelters since authorities raised the alert status for Sinabung to the highest level in November.

Gray ash covered villages, farms and trees as far as 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of the mountain.

The 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) Mount Sinabung has sporadically erupted since September. An eruption in 2010 killed two people and caught scientists off guard because the volcano had been quiet for four centuries.

Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said airlines had been notified to avoid routes near the mountain.

Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Well, so many places in the world have dangers and threats from natural disaters and I feel darn fortunate to live in New Mexico where we have very few problems from these kinds of things. Draught has been just about our only concern here and that has been somewhat alleviated by a good amount of rainfall in August and September and a couple of snowstorms in the last month.
But, I do wish the very best for the affected people in Indonesia.

The ring of fire is what makes me nervous living only miles within Mt Rainier, for it could blow soon also and what a disaster for OUR Country it would be.

Nothing compared to what would happen if Yellowstone decides to blow and scientists say it's long overdue. Don't take this as gospel truth. Some say it will, some say it won't.

I read yesterday that Mount Etna was active. What the freak is going on? (feeling nervous).

If the Good Lord cared, they wouldn't be in danger.

400 years is just time enough for a volcano to take a deep breath...

That's about right, I agree. Time means nothing to a volcano.

If Yellowstone goes,,,,,we will be back to the ice age for about 500 years

The last program I saw about Yellowstone informed us that if the blows, mankind will vanish. Imagine a volcano 10,000 TIMES bigger than Mt. St. Helens. The ash would blot out the sun for years, leaving what's left of us to starve or smother. This is the world's largest volcano.

I hope Al Gore won't hear about it because it will increase global warming

pretty sure that the last 6 eruptions of other volcanos this year has already done that... even the gop has admitted theres such a thing as global warming... where u been ?

Global Warming is all hype. It's nothing except the powers of governments to use it to profit from it. Marx and Engel's were among the first Environmental Extremist and people like Al Gore exploited those ideologies for making a profit and pushed the government into believing the humans have caused the planet to Cool, then Warm - repeatedly - that until it is now just Climate Change...because they were proved wrong. Their computers could not predict how little our global temperatures changed in the last 16 years even when our output of Carbon Dioxide reached 400 ppm last May. Nor did they predict the Little Ice Age that has started mass Ice Caps at both poles in this past year, caused by the Suns cooling during its 22 year cycle 24 polar flip over the past 11 years that completed on 12/29/2013. Our Industrial age raised the CO 2 only 100 ppm and is what has held back the Global Cooling from becoming Global Freezing like occurred between 1350 and 1850. These 15 TINY volcanic actions over the past week are nothing but the Earth letting out a little pressure.

Actually, it works the other way around.

The Little Ice age, which ended in the mid-1899s--and which Al never appears to have heard about while getting D grades in high school science--is thought to have been caused by multiple volcanic eruptions during the centuries that climate event was cooling the planet and causing famine and plague.
