Honduras police say heiress/spa owner slain

Honduras Slaying

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) -- The great-granddaughter of heiress and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post has been found slain at her luxury spa resort on the Caribbean island of Roatan, Honduras police said Friday.

Roatan police chief Alex Madrid said Nedenia Post Dye was found stabbed in her room on Dec. 22. He said police had arrested a local singer whom Dye was helping quit drugs.

"She was a good woman who worked with young people at risk, drug addicts and alcoholics," Madrid said.

The suspect, Lenin Roberto Arana, told police that he and Dye, 46, had been romantically involved, Madrid said. Arana, who used the stage name "The Canary," told local reporters that he was innocent.

Madrid said Dye had been living for 15 years on Roatan, where she ran the Baan Suerte luxury spa.

Dye, of Santa Monica, Calif., told an alumni publication of her alma mater, George Washington University, last year that she shared a love of risk-taking and adventure with her great-grandmother, who inherited the cereal company that would become General Foods Inc.

"My friend and I had an idea to start a business," Dye told the alumni magazine. "I wanted to go to Asia but she said `No, Central America is closer. If (the business) fails, we can swim home.'"

Madrid said Arana had been captured wearing blood-soaked clothing as he tried to flee in Dye's car.

"I'm innocent," Arana told local reporters. "Nedenia was like a mother to me. She protected me."

Police said Dye appeared to have been stabbed many times in the back.

Roatan is an island renowned for its scenic beaches, scuba diving, luxury resorts and vacation homes.

Roatan is a beautiful island and has problems just like any other place in the world. Just don't get involved with the wrong people or be in the wrong place when you visit..

Honduras, by the way, has been the murder capital of the world since the U.S. launched/supported a coup there a few years ago, ousting President Zelaya.

Anytime the US is involved in any country, things get messed up for the people and this is part of the reason why we as American are being hated around the world. When will our government keep out of the business of other countries. The government ought to take care of the large problem/issue we have at home and stop trying to take over other countries whilst pretending not to be involved.

This woman will not be the first to be killed by someone who received the benefits of charitable attention. For some of the emotionally needy or mentally unbalance there is not enough attention, reassurance, alms etc. in this world to make them feel good or resolve their anger. The slightest withdrawal (or perceived withdrawal) of what is being emotionally or materially demanded can result in a tantrum (in this case the tantrum was murder) because the benefactor is now perceived as a betrayer. I'm not suggesting that people not be charitable and/or understanding.....but simply to understand the limits of one's own ability to help and to know ahead of time if the situation really requires a trained professional.
