NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Police in Connecticut released thousands of pages of documents Friday from the investigation into last year's school massacre in Newtown, which could shed additional light on the world of the 20-year-old gunman.
The paperwork "has been redacted according to law," and it includes text, photos, videos and recordings of 911 calls received by state police.
In a letter accompanying the report, Reuben F. Bradford, commissioner of the state Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, wrote that much of the identifying information involving children and many witnesses was being withheld.
Prosecutors issued a summary of the investigation last month that portrayed the gunman, Adam Lanza, as obsessed with mass murders, but the report concluded that Lanza's motives for the massacre might never be known.
The summary report referred to items found on a computer at Lanza's house that included writings detailing relationships, personal beliefs, a daily schedule, desires, goals and other topics.
Lanza gunned down 20 first-graders and six educators with a semi-automatic rifle at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012, after killing his mother inside their home. He committed suicide with a handgun as police arrived at the school.
To try to figure out the motive, investigators said, they interviewed members of Lanza's family, teachers and others. They said they also tried within the limits of privacy laws to gather information on his medical treatment.
Lanza "was undoubtedly afflicted with mental health problems; yet despite a fascination with mass shootings and firearms, he displayed no aggressive or threatening tendencies," it said.
In fifth grade, Lanza wrote "The Big Book of Granny," in which the main character has a gun in her cane and shoots people, and another character talks of liking to hurt people, especially children. The book was among items seized from Lanza's home, but there was no indication he ever handed in the book at school.
Lanza became obsessed with the 1999 bloodbath at Columbine High in Colorado and other mass killings, the report said. He also kept a spreadsheet ranking mass murders.
The report also said that in 2005, Lanza was diagnosed with Asperger's disorder - an autism-like condition that is not associated with violence - and that he lacked empathy for others and behaved strangely. Nobody was allowed into his room, not even to clean, according to the report. It said Lanza also disliked birthdays, Christmas and holidays and did not like to have his hair cut.
He also wouldn't touch doorknobs, his food had to be arranged on the plate in a certain way, and he changed clothes often during the day. He was a loner at school and was repelled by crowds and loud noises.
I think privacy laws good out the window the minute you become a mass murderer. This country is so odd. You still have rights when you execute 20 humans? What is this?
I think privacy laws should go out the window the minute you become a mass murderer. This country is so odd. You still have rights when you execute 20 humans? What is this?Trouble typing tonight. sheesh.
I thought felons had no civil rights.
no when you hurt kids it goes out the window he forced his way in and attacked the 20 kids that were in the room that his mother substituted in. I only heard this but it makes since he got mad because his mother was showing all her love and attention to the kids and not him. now every year they don't have children there a song its called hevean by baby kaely everyone should watch it its about sandy hook. I remember the stuff unfolding I have nephews and a brother who is 5 I have cousins that age I can image the hurt but I couldn't ever imagine losing my child.
the very fact he was diagnosed with a mental disorder should have demanded the dr, and others should have entered him in national registry restricting he have a gun, or any gun in his home....... and it also dicttes that all gun sales are registered, to assure he would never get one, and that all must list guns in their home and people who live there, etc, these 26 could be alive if done
I agree with you. When I got car insurance, Geico wanted to know how many people in my household had a drivers licesne, so why don't they do that when you buy a gun.
DBARR24, this kid only buying candy was kicked out of school in Miami, kicked ouy of his home and sent to live with a relative in Sanford. He possesed drugs, was a menance in school, had been suspended three times before he wasn't allowed back in, and soforth. The reason you don't know this stuff is because the criminal trial rules wouldn't allow it. The reason a civil trial was not brought by others is because all thesei liems are allowed to be presented in court and the trial would ne a loser. I only know part of his history tho and I feel sad for the kid and the shooter. The kid has gone on to someplace else now and the shooters life is ruined forever.
Surely you are not saying that the kid deserved to die for school misbehavior? How can you say the shooter's life is ruiined when he got away scot-free, with a big support group, and has good prospects of making money off of it? Did the shooter learn anything? Was it that he was validated and could go on to abuse two women, without penalty?
This is just incredible. Other reports have indicated that Mom was trying to have this nut committed, which sounds like a really good idea to me. Yet she continued to take him to the gun range, failed to secure HER
Did anyone not recognize how disturbed he looked? There had to be some who saw him as being an at risk kid.
he was petrified the poor kid had no idea wut was going on he had a mental disorder thats why hes an easy target its sad
I didn't need a bad photo to convince me of that. The fact of 26 dead is ample proof that he was a bit off. It appears the only one needing more proof is Brittany. Maybe she was his girlfriend and she can't stand the fact that he offed himself without saying a heartfelt goodbye to her.
is he a terrorist. What is definition of terrorism and is this terrorist act.
Ugly kid looks like his cotton briefs are way to high or his pony tail is too tight. Not about to miss this freak
Just looking at this monsters pix scares me, and to think his mother actually put a gun in this demented young mans hand? WHAT WAS SHE THINKING?
If your not at home, please see to it that your firearms are locked up very securely so they can't fall into the wrong hands. That is part of being a responsible gun owner. Hidden under your mattress doesn't count. Most handguns are hidden within 10' of the bed in homes with no gun safe. Most criminals know this already.
Who cares what he thought, look at the picture ! Does this look like a sane person ???
