Hospital: Teen who was shot at Colo. school dies

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) - A suburban Denver high school student who was shot in the head by a classmate died Saturday afternoon, hospital officials said in a statement.

Claire Davis, 17, was in critical condition after being shot at point-blank range at Arapahoe High School on Dec. 13. Friends and well-wishers had posted prayers online and raised money to help pay for her medical care.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share that at 4:29 p.m. this afternoon, Claire Davis passed away, with her family at her side," the statement from Littleton Adventist Hospital.

"Despite the best efforts of our physicians and nursing staff, and Claire's fighting spirit, her injuries were too severe and the most advanced medical treatments could not prevent this tragic loss of life. Claire's death is immensely heartbreaking for our entire community, our staff and our families."

Karl Pierson, 18, shot Davis, who just happened to be sitting nearby with a friend as Pierson, armed with a shotgun, ammunition strapped to his body, Molotov cocktails and a machete, entered the school and headed toward the library. Davis appeared to be a random target, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson has said.

Pierson likely intended to track down a librarian who had disciplined him, but Robinson said Pierson's arsenal suggested Pierson intended to hurt many others at the school just 8 miles from Columbine High School.

Pierson set off one of the incendiary devices and fired five shots before killing himself just one minute and 20 seconds after entering the building. He knew a sheriff's deputy assigned to the school was closing in, Robinson said at a news conference.

Senior Chris Davis, who is not related to Claire Davis, said she loved horses, had a lot of friends and always seemed happy. Chris Davis, whose locker is next to Claire's, helped organize a fundraising effort for her family.

Students held vigils for Davis after the shooting. Typical was a story told by classmate Maggie Hurlbut.

"One time I remember I was upset in the hallway, and she came up to me and she just - it was like, 'Hey Maggie, I know we don't know each other well but are you doing OK?' And I told her yeah, and she was like, 'Anything you need, I'm here for you,'" Hurlbut said. "Again, that's who she is, and she just wants to take care of others, and that was really just a good representation of her character and who she was."

Gov. John Hickenlooper visited Davis and her family at the hospital and had asked for prayers.

Sheriff Robinson called Davis "a young woman of principle" and "an innocent young lady."

Pierson's original target was believed to be a librarian who coached the school's speech and debate team. Pierson was a skilled speaker and debater on the team. The librarian, whose name was not released, had disciplined the teen in September for reasons that haven't been disclosed. Robinson said Pierson had made some sort of threat against the librarian in September.

"We are looking into that, to the degree that it was understood, and then what interactions or interventions took place," the sheriff said.

The librarian was able to escape the school unharmed, Robinson said.

Pierson legally purchased his shotgun at a local store a week before the shooting and bought the ammunition the day of the shooting. Anyone 18 and older is allowed to buy a shotgun in Colorado; only those over 21 can legally buy a handgun.

Pierson, whose parents were divorced, lived at least part of the time with his mother in a higher-end neighborhood in suburban Highlands Ranch.

The Arapahoe shooting came a day before the one-year anniversary of the Newtown, Conn., attack in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

You have to spare the rod nowadays or you get SUED,by your own kids!!! So we now have an entire generation of spoiled people who value nothing or anyone because they can't learn right from wrong from anyone.Video game violence and alot of rap music should be outlawed.I believe in freedom of speech, but there has to be some kind of limits for the above mentioned industries who promote"scoring the most points".Fantasy becomes reality all too often these days

this 18 year old man should be put in front of a firing squad and he should recieve the same. Perhaps vidulantizm should be at hand here. The state shouls be suited for allowing laws to allow a person under the age of 30 to be able to purchase a gun, not to take guns away from sportsman. The government could stop all this by raising the age of gun purchases to anyone under the age of 30 years of age. in this case, the parent should be arrested for harboring. if the parent knew their son purchased a gun and baught it into their home. parents should search their homes and confiscate any guns, knives, and so on and remove these such items from their childrens posessions or go to jail and do as much time as the sibling itself. reality hits home, and yes, do it now before things get even worse. in my town, i met a man. he for 4 years, planned to go to our train bridge. he was trying to get the cops there to shoot at them. 3 days before that , as i am legally blind, scott petersons mom was out of town and i was in this mans livingroom talking to him. two days later, he shot three kids while they were jumping off the train bridge where many went swimming. it hit local news, however not national news. he dug a fox hole and waited for anyone to come. 3 kids are now burried. kingsford mi. 2009. we all pray for claire davis in our hometown and god bless the youngsters soul. I thank you for reading my comment of factual basis.

To all,
The worst thing a person can do is bury their child.
I have done this.....
My only child Mark Jr. was killed by a drunk driver.
He was a passenger in his own vehicle.
He had arranged for a designated driver to take him and his friends home from a Halloween party.
.........
The kids were off to a Halloween party to drink and have fun,and they were of age too!
On the way home from the party a guy ran a stop sign on highway 50 in Missouri and caused the accident.
My son , 'the owner of the truck " and the one who had set up the designated driver to drive them home was the only one killed in the accident..... other than the drunk driver who ran the stop sign. The other friends of MarkJr. were injured too.
Some of the injuries included a broken back as well as a compound fracture of the leg and arm.
Folks my point is this, please ,please be extra kind to the family of this young girl whom lost her life....
As crazy as it may sound I have had more trouble from people in my inner circle than anyone else! The people you expect to rally FOR you may in fact be the ones that surprise you the most.
When you are drowning... some will throw you a life line... some will turn and run... and a small few will jump in the frigid waters, swim out to you and help you get to shore.......
Take it from me folks,
I have been there.
I never thought I of all people would be in this boat...
But here I am now just trying to figure out what to do next.
Can you imagine???
Life without your child... your only child???
It really, really sucks!
This holiday season... think about what is REALLY important
"not this crap about the Duck Dynasty Guy either "................
Love one another....... trust me!!!
I have lost my only child and my mother and father is just 2 years and a month............
That's pretty tough stuff!
So please don't take anyone for granted as they may not be here tomorrow..................
Thats my reality..............

hello....i probably don't know you.....i might have seen you passing in the halls......it's just your bad luck you happen to be here in front of me at this moment in time.......nothing personal, you understand......it's just, i have to kill you.......you know, just because...

probably NOT the greatest generation.....probably actively trying to be the worst generation.....because.....why bother?

prayers for her family, prayers for his family......

prayers for a country that breeds this kind of monster and considers it normal............

and then...........................more prayers.....................just because..................

that is one of the most saddest stories i have ever heard that girl deserved to live why in the f*** would you kill such an innocent child who was about to graduate this year? I hope you rot in hell you evil son of a b**** because its then next best thing thats coming to you and here where im from you have to be 21 to even purchase any assault rifles, shotgun, pistols, machine guns, etc. because if you dont have a carry and conceal weapons permit the police wont allow you to even own a gun or ammo.
