2 winning tickets sold in $636 million Mega Millions drawing

At Least Two Win Big In Massive Mega Millions Drawing

ATLANTA (AP) -- Two lucky winning tickets were sold in Tuesday's near-record $636 million Mega Millions drawing: one at a tiny newsstand in Atlanta, and the other more than 2,000 miles away in California.

The lucky Georgia ticket was sold at a Gateway Newsstand in Atlanta's affluent Buckhead area, Mega Millions Executive Director Paula Otto said.

Newsstand owner Young Soolee grinned as she arrived Wednesday morning at the shop off the lobby of the Alliance Center office building. The newsstand is frequented by workers at the office building, which sits across the street from an upscale mall.

"I'm so excited and so happy now," Soolee said. "I love my store and the customer now."

Buckhead is a financial center of Atlanta and one of its largest neighborhoods, a vast northern area known for upscale shopping centers such as Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza, both a short walk from the store that sold the winning ticket.

The California ticket was sold at Jennifer's Gift Shop in San Jose.

Mega Millions Lottery Jackpot Rises Past $600 Million

The winning numbers in the drawing were: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39; Mega Ball: 7.

The jackpot was the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history. It started its ascent Oct. 4. Twenty-two draws came and went without winners, Otto said.

Otto said $336 million in tickets were sold for Tuesday's drawing - they had projected $319 million.

"Sales were a little better than we'd anticipated," Otto said. "It was a fun run; it was our first holiday run for either of the big jackpot games."

The winners can choose to be paid over time or in a cash lump sum, Otto said. Based on the $636 million figure, the winners would receive $318 million each over time or $170 million each in cash.

Mega Millions changed its rules in October to help increase the jackpots by lowering the odds of winning the top prize. That means the chances of winning the jackpot are now about 1 in 259 million. It used to be about 1 in 176 million, nearly the same odds of winning a Powerball jackpot.

If I won, I would set up a foundation that would build a lab and hire top scientists to do nothing else but find a CURE (not treatment) for breast cancer......anybody got a better idea?

you will burn through that money real fast. It costs around $100,000 just to conduct a week of research by a group of 10 scientist. That is excluding their salary and the rent and overhead.

Good luck to them!
Maybe the lottery people should do the same as the European Lottery where, once the Jackpot reaches a certain level, then it is capped at that level, and any prize money that would have increased the Jackpot above the capped level is rolled down to the next Prize Category in that Draw where there is at least one winner, thereby increasing prizes in that lower Prize Category.

That way there is still a chance of a big win but more money for lower level winners.

I was just saying that yesterday too. Heck they could cap it at $10 million or so and look how many winners there would be and money going into the economy!

though I think all the money should be given away, not just cap it and a minor winner, I say give away all the money, just in smaller increments to more people!

If you want to win millions of dollars just take all those unwanted marketing email and unsubscribe. All of a sudden you will get 20 emails from Nigeria, UK, England, and they will tell you they have a atm card with millions on it, all you have to do is put your info on it and your bank account number.

Just a note. The chance of YOU winning the lottery doesn't depend on how many people play. The odds of YOU winning only increase the more money you spend on it. Think of it this way, if YOU were the only player, you still would be unlikely to win because you would still have to pick the winning numbers, which, alas, is unlikely. About 259,000,000 to 1. Yikes.

Now you are in the spirit... So many negative posts. It's a dream...a pig in a poke...a shot. Those that are blessed or cursed with the winnings have their lives changed. Lets just hope they do good things but I am happy for anyone that gets a leg up in this world...

I say that too dianna. congrats to the lucky ones and I am happy for whoever did win and I hate reading these whining posts on here from people who are already resentful because someone won so much money. great xmas for all the lucky ones and a chance for others on the next lottery.

What a shame...they jack up the powerball #'s to 79 and then have 21 draws with no winners. The only way for someone to hit the winning #'s is for most of America to play thus jacking up the pot then they take HALF for themselves as most take the lump sum cash option. It just a licence to print money. We also hear how the lottery gives to school BILLIONS of dollars....has anyone ever heard of a school near them to receive any funding from a lottery commission? I sure haven't...Makes you wonder who's being shystered here.

I yoo have had this thought MANY TIMES. I would love to see them just give teachers s rsise everytime they have a winner! Or at least remodel some old schools!!

sorry tom, teachers are the last ones to be in need of a raise much less as often as you would give them one. there are people out here in need but teachers and nurses are not in those groups. I can personally find others who are genuinely in need. if your school building is too old, talk to your state or city about it or start paying higher taxes so they can be fixed.

Here's an idea. DON'T PLAY IT. Sit in the corner and keep your negative comments to yourself. I am 100% sure if you won, your tune would be different. Stop eating lemons first thing in the morning.
