U.S. groom killed on way back from his wedding when he stopped to help stranded motorist

Hours After Getting Married, Groom Dies Trying To Help

CHICAGO (AP)- A man married less than seven hours was killed along with a stranded motorist he stopped to help in the snow when they were struck by several vehicles, authorities say.

The man was on the way back from his wedding reception to a hotel when the accident happened in Crown Point in northwestern Indiana.

William "Riley" Knight, 49, of Crown Point, was driving with his wife, Nikki, about 11:45 p.m. Saturday when they saw a woman who had slid off the road in the snow.

"He said, 'We've got to stop, it's late and they need help,'" Nikki Knight told the Chicago Sun-Times on Sunday.

He pulled his truck into a nearby driveway and Nikki Knight waited inside while he went out to help Linda Darlington, 42, of Crown Point. They were standing by the side of the road when they were struck by one vehicle, and then two more, the Lake County sheriff's office said.

Nikki Knight, a registered nurse, said when she got to the wreck, neither Knight nor Darlington had pulses. They were pronounced dead at the scene early Sunday.

"I went from a being a newlywed to a widow in less than 48 hours - the highest high to the lowest low," Nikki Knight said. "It's a blur."

Police said all drivers involved in the crash remained at the scene. No charges had been filed as of Sunday afternoon.

I sincerely hope they had a least one day as man and wife and got to consummate their marriage. That at least could be one thing that could never be taken away. I feel so sorry for the bride, so sorry.

It's sad what happened but it just supports my opinion of "No good deed goes unpunished".

God is Love December 17 2013 at 12:20 AM

I read an article tonight about the King of Jordan stopping to help push a car that was stuck, out of the snow. Jordanians have been praising him for his humble and compassionate act. Now, consider Mr. Knight who was not royalty, but a noble man who acted with compassion, care, and total selflessness on his wedding day. He demonstrated not only empathy, but also a willingness to act in the aid of a total stranger. He too should be praised and commended. Yet here, people say "don't help...call someone ELSE to help". How sad for our American society that we hold such views. What a sad statement for the selfish and loveless times in which we live.
Thank You Mr. and Mrs. Knight for your willingness to truly care. May others learn from your example. May God bless you for your act of love and compassion shown to a stranger. May He comfort your heart Mrs. Knight, in your time of grief. Thank you and God bless you always.

"No greater love have a man than he lay down his life for a friend." And to think, Mr. Knight did it for someone he didn't even know.

First of all, I'll like to point out the irony of his name. Such as "Knight" in shining armor. As I know his wife is grieving, I hope she sleeps well knowing, if only for a short time, was married to a wonderful human.
