Remembering the Victims of Sandy Hook

It's been one year since 26 lives were lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and over these past 12 months, in the wake of the tragedy, there's been a huge outpouring of support for and within the Newtown community. People from near and far have come together to mourn, honor, pray and also make a difference.

From the Sandy Ground Project which strives to build 26 playgrounds, one to honor each victim, to the 26 people who biked from Newtown to Washington, D.C. for a rally in support of gun control legislation, we look at some spectacular stories of how those lost are being remembered.

Today, the president takes time to remember Newtown as well. He released this message to commemorate the anniversary:

When there are those who use the blood of innocents and push emotional response over thoughtful consideration, the proper step is to prepare in case those using emotion should succeed in their short-term goals. It is the only thing that will balk them from achieving their long-term goals.

I WONDER IF ANYONE REMEMBERS THE BACKGROUND HERE..SHOOTERS MOTHER HAD AN ARSENAL IN AN UNLOCKED CLOSET. WHY?
ALSO WONDER IF NRA IS APPLAUDING THIS "RIGHT"...I HAVE REA D THE CLAUSE IN THE CONTITUTION REGARING THE BEARING OF ARMS..AND IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IT IS PREFACED WITH "IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN A...MILITIA..." it does not give a blanket permission for everyone to keep guns!. YOU DONT SEE DOMESTIC MASSACRES OF THIS NATURE IN CIVILIZED COUNTRIES THAT HAVE REASONABLE Your Say...

I think Mom was as crazy as junior was, just less bizarre. Knowing that her son had severe mental health issues, she took him to the firing range. When the cops entered the home, they found her dead body and a note on the kitchen table with a check telling junior that the check was for the new gun she had bought for him. How nuts was she?

Please do not be confused by the meaning of the word "militia" in the constitutional context. What it meant was that all able bodied men were supposed to be available to defend against the dangers one might encounter during those days. We don't have militias anymore, but in that context it was determined that meant an individual right and need to own firearms. The SCOTUS recently said people have an individual right to own guns. States do have the right to pass their own laws regulating that ownership and usage. There is no "blanket" right to own a gun.

Still, as a gun owner, I am a firm believer in strict gun control laws. BC, stiff penalties for felons found with guns, and forcible institutionalization for mental illness cases, etc. Lots of room there. But what I am not for is gun confiscation. If I am not abusing my gun ownership why should I lose those rights because someone else is abusing that same gun ownership.

I believe God would count 28 lives lost in Newtown a year ago.

The "monster" was a human life torn by mental illness. While his acts were monstrous, his too was a life lost. I mourn for all in this tragedy.

I cannot bear to even imagine the pain and loss these families have. I have small beautiful children i drop off at school each day. I also know there is NO way to stop this kind of massacre by gun control. An insane murderer can buy an illegal gun any day on any street corner. Criminals care nothing about laws. NO law will stop this. The killers who target schools are looking for numbers and know there are easy entrances with no security at school. They never go into police stations proving they are not are so crazy but are cowards. Gun control only disarms people who wish they could have been there to stop that little demon. Instead..get rid of the floor to ceiling glass doors and windows..and put armed guards in the schools and watch how fast this never happens again. The cowards will go to other UNARMED locations. I wish these parents would really consider the now living children and see this as the truth it is so that their children, now back in the arms of God, did not die in vain along with all those who died to make America the free country it was. There is only one way to stop a bad mind with a gun and that is a good mind with a gun. As the saying is..ONE man with a gun can control a HUNDRED men. Instead of empowering criminals as in Australia, push the govt to endow money to our schools instead of foreign wars to rid the schools of floor to ceiling windows and glass door entrances and hire armed guards. Our children are much more important than airports and they managed to do that. Our tax dollars need to be used for OUR children. So when you meet with elected..tell them that...not to take the guns from every law abiding US citizen who wished they could have been there that day to stop that sick murdering mind.
