Kenya: Grenade thrown at tour van carrying Brits

Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - A police official says an unknown assailant has hurled a hand grenade at a van carrying British tourists in Kenya's coastal region.

Regional police coordinator Aggrey Adoli said Thursday the hand grenade failed to explode after hitting a window of the vehicle in a neighborhood of the area's main city Mombasa. Police withheld the tourists' identity.

Britain's Foreign Office said it was urgently looking into the reports.

Al-Shabab militants from Somalia have been blamed for previous attacks on tourists in the region, including two kidnappings of European tourists in 2011.

Kenya deployed its military to fight militants in Somalia in October 2011. Al-Shabab then vowed to retaliate, and the country has since suffered a wave of gun and grenade attack in some of its cities.

Kenya used to be a "safe" Country to visit, that's why it IS a surprise. And you shoudn't group all countries in Africa together as "bad." Like our Country, there are some states that are safer than others, although admittedly even our "safe" places are gradually becoming violent and dangerous, like Africa's. Hope for Peace on Earth; pray for Peace if you are a believer. Remember:
" People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

I just visited Cairo in June, Almost no toufists at Tut exhibit, Pyramids etc. Even Luxor was slow. The vendors and tour operaters were verging on desperation. Tourism gives these people a huge economic boolst and fosters more understanding of other cultures. The radicals don't want this, they want fear and anarchy to rule and by that they condemn their more moderate countrymen. If Kenya is smart they will capture and publicly hang these bastards after a trial.

Sad to hear about Egypt. I have had the good fortune to have visited on five occasions the lat in 2010. I agree that tourism has both an economic and cultural understanding effect. I have also visited kenya 95 and 06 and want to return there soon. But this report is a little disturbing. I wonder if the British tourists were targeted because ether is ill feeling in Kenya for some of the landowners who have been there since colonial days.

When visiting Africa, there is a chance of an attack by a wild animal or a terrorist. You never know which one of the two will come up and bite you. Than again, that is Africa.

Went on safari in Kenya and Tanzania. It was during a period of one of their elections. But, we enjoyed our 2 weeks and thought Africa was more beautiful than expected. Had no problems with the Muslims, young people, lodge staff or anything. If you look for trouble...surely, you will find it. We respected where we where and, as most Americans are...were not arrogant.
