Amtrak train collides with vehicle in Virginia

WAVERLY, Va. (AP) -- An Amtrak train is on its way to Boston again after it struck a vehicle in rural Virginia that police said attempted to drive around a crossing bar, destroying the car and injuring the driver.

Amtrak says the train did not derail and none of its 46 passengers was injured in the crash, which occurred around 6 a.m. Thursday in Waverly, a community about 50 miles southeast of Richmond.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the driver of the vehicle, Untron Drew, was taken by med-flight to Richmond with injuries she said weren't life threatening.

Amtrak spokeswoman Christina Leeds said Northeast Regional train 174 was traveling from Norfolk, Va., to Boston. She said it has left the crash scene is operating on a two-hour delay.

need gates that extend clear across both lanes on both sides. Need a siren to blow as they are activated. Other than that just keep on cleaning up the gene pool !!!

Need drivers that obey the rules.

No - You need to be able to clear tracks. If a car is on the tracks and the gate closes in front of him, then he will not be able to proceed. That is why the gates block only the right hand side.

These stupid people will never learn that you can't beat a train. Now she will sue and probably win.

Today the Railroad will file a suit against the driver or their insurance company for equipment damages and delays. This can run into hundreds of thousand dollars.

Hi Mike! gwwhitt December 12 2013 at 2:08 PM

I share your disgust with this person's stupidity, gww, but fear not: he or she will win NOTHING in a lawsuit. The constitution, for all its follies, at least protects railroads in these cases. Same as a bum killed walking down the tracks; anyone doing so is illegally trespassing. And the writers of that clause of the US and state constitutions knew that (1) the engineer can't dodge you, (2) his stopping distance is VERY long, and (3) he has the right of way, technically and legally.

People those railroad crossing gates, lights, & bells are there to keep you safe.

Why can't you use them?

You want to get somewhere fast & feel you don't have the time to wait.

BUT

Do you realize how late you'll actually be when you don't want to wait?

EXTREMELY LATE AS YOU'RE PULLED FROM THE CRASH & HOSPITALIZED IF YOU'RE LUCKY.

If you're "not" lucky, you won't be late at all.

WHY?

YOU'RE GOING TO YOUR OWN FUNERAL.

Take the time to leave a little earlier & not only will you save your life, but others around you.

At least there was no-one hurt on the train, the driver of the car should not have gone around the crossing-bar that was down. When my family and I went to san fran. to a funeral,we saw alot of cars that do that in front of thier fast moving bart train.. Poeple there must want to see god sooner than their families want..oh yeah, this was in Burlinggame,California.. Poeple there really go out of their way to see if they can beat the train. Stupid..........

The driver of the car is an idiot!! The train cannot stop on a dime!!! Why do they have the bars
