Sports Stars, at UN, Speak Out Against Homophobia

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Ex-NBA player Jason Collins and tennis great Martina Navratilova urged the International Olympic Committee to do more to support gay athletes at a special event for International Human Rights Day.

The two openly gay athletes appeared at the United Nations on Tuesday, along with human rights activists.

This year's events and comments are largely focused on the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where a law passed this summer banning homosexual "propaganda" has drawn international condemnation.

In a related event, U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power called the Russian law "as outrageous as it is dangerous."

She was meeting with dozens of LGBT activists from around the world.

Power says 78 countries still have laws that criminalize consensual sex between adults.

Why are major sporting events being awarded to what amount to third-world hellhole banana republics?

The Olympics are about excellence in sports - NOT religious beliefs, sexual preferences, cultural differences, etc. The purpose is to laud those athletes that have excelled to greatness. Sad that we mire that with our own personal prejudices. We have lost site of the purpose of yet another tradition.

I am not abusive. When people and most of one generation find out with a few symbols that everything that they have based their lives on is based on snowballing misleading information their first act of denial can be very emotional causing them to lash out. I understand this, and as Jesus say’s, “It’s okay”.

Gay athletes have rights like very body else. What Russia is doing is so wrong. What gives them right to treat people like this. How do they think are that they can do this.

What does one thing have to do with the other??? I don't see straight people whining and screaming that they were born that way and display themselves groping each other in public.

This article said the law was against homosexual propaganda. That sounds to me that they prefer not to have any gay organization promoting that lifestyle. Granted, there was nothing there banning hetrosexual propaganda but I haven't seen such as that, probably because hetrosexual lifestyles have been the predominant way for so long. Things like this are what I somewhat expected when being gay or bi became a fad and everyone demanded that it was normal or acceptable.
The basic fact to me is that any athlete who qualifies at that level should be allowed to compete. If they win, it is that person who won as it has always been. Being gay won't made him/her faster, stronger or more skilled so get off of it. Is Russia homophobic, maybe they are and maybe they have a reason to be. Not all have "progressed" as have the US, Canada, England etc.

I would advise that you read some more on this subject. "Homosexual propaganda" was defined so broadly in the law that it's pretty much illegal to even speak ABOUT homosexuality in public in Russia (they're not promoting it and saying "Hey kids you should all be gay;" they're just advocating for equal rights (well not anymore, since they would be punished for doing so, and many gay people have been beaten in public there now, and it's only getting worse; the government has pretty much allowed this to happen with this law; they're fostering this idea that being gay is wrong and bad, when that's not necessarily true; any person can do bad things, as evidenced by the straight people in rushing participating in gay bashings -- I would say that's much worse than two consenting adults having sex) ). What reason could Russia possibly have to be homophobic?

I'm cool with what whatever anyone wants to do in there home (no PDAs fellas, thanks) what I'm not cool about is the hypocrisy of left who chastise anyone who judges for judging countries like Russia. Do what you always tell everyone to do keep your nose out of other peoples "bidness".

Straights PDA all over the place. You've got a bad case of the "ickies". Get your mind out of the gutter and quit thinking about what other people do in their bedrooms.

Keywords: in their bedrooms. Let them keep it there then and stop making themselves look foolish by making sure the world knows exactly what they do there.

C'mon people, get over yourselves! Do you see any heterosexual propaganda at any sport events, such as the Olympic Games? So why should there be homosexual propaganda…. think about it! Just go there,(if you want) do your best, have fun, make new friends and bring home the Gold, that is what it is about. Every thing at the right place at the right time.
