General Motors names product chief Mary Barra as new CEO

DETROIT, Dec 10 (Reuters) - General Motors Co on Tuesday said Chief Executive Dan Akerson will step down next month and be replaced by Mary Barra, the company's global product development chief, marking the first time a major U.S. automaker has been led by a woman.

The company said in a statement that Akerson, who is also the chairman, will leave on Jan. 15, pulling ahead his planned departure by several months. His wife was recently diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer.

Barra, 51, the executive vice president for global product development, purchasing and supply chain, was elected by the company board as the next CEO and will become a director. Theodore Solso, 66, will succeed Akerson, 65, as chairman.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.

There is absolutely no reason why this woman should not be successful!! The only reason she will have any difficulty - not with the unions, it will be with her fellow male executives. I am a male , worked in manufacturing all my life, have seen many competent women ousted by their less competent male club members to the detriment of the company.

Is she married? If not that will be problems. There are quite a few jerks who will treat her as Affirmative Action CEOs. She should watch out those jerks.

She certainly couldn't do any worse than the batch of shysters that put GM in bankrupcy!

Anyone who chooses a Honda or Toyota over an American made vehicle needs their head examined. I can understand not going the direction of Ford but GM has made high quality vehicles for over a century. Yes there has been a hiccup in quality a time or two but the same goes for ALL automakers. If GM had folded there would have been nearly 2 MILLION jobs lost. If you want to call it "Government Motors" go right ahead.. Their stocks are surging, Quality is at an all time high, Customer satisfaction and loyalty are also at an all time high. I currently drive a 2006 Tahoe that has never had any issues or given me any trouble. I plan to purchase a 2015 when they arrive next spring.

The unions run the company. Obama gave it to them in the bail out. She will try but, good business and unions don't go together.

The unions will run it into the ground. And, they will do it without ever selling me or mine a GM again ever.

Gee, it would be a really good debate if any of the people debated the subject had any idea of what they were taking about.
If you want to know the facts about the money that was used for the Auto Bailout then please read this follow up story.

Looks like Obama says he saved the auto industry, yes at our expense. Us, the tax payers got stuck with 10 million loss of our money for it. But that's what happens when people who know nothing about a candidate elect a candidate who knows nothing about everything in general. No experience in anything except a community organizer and that didn't go so well either since there's a big mess where he served still, Hope this woman can get it going.
