Ohio governor declares game day 'Scarlet Letter Saturday'

Health Overhaul Ohio

By Rusty Miller
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Gov. John Kasich wants Ohioans to avoid using the dreaded letter "M'' on Saturday when No. 3 Ohio State faces archrival Michigan.

Kasich declared the game day as "Scarlet Letter Saturday" in honor of Ohio State's rivalry game with the Wolverines. Ohio fans have often found other words to refer to Michigan, calling the school "That Team Up North" among other epithets and singing songs about their utter disregard for the state.

Lately, Buckeyes fans on Twitter have taken to dropping the letter M from their tweets, even from their own names.

The resolution points out that "in the only instance in American history when two states went to war with each other, the state beginning with the letter 'M' lost."

It also notes that the United States Fish and Wildlife Service suggested adding the wolverine to the threatened species list under the Endangered Species Act.

Each letter 'M' in the resolution is crossed out and in red ink - scarlet and gray are Ohio State's school colors.

It closes, "We, John R. Kasich and Mary Taylor, Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby recognize Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, as SCARLET LETTER SATURDAY throughout Ohio and encourage all Ohioans to avoid using the letter 'M' when possible."

At the bottom is an official seal of the state of Ohio - contrary to popular belief, it does not include a football or a picture of Woody Hayes - along with Kasich's signature.

Listen! Tomorrow represents the single greatest rivalry in all of sport. The teams are dedicated and the fans are loyal to the core. Nothing about this thread represents that AT ALL!! In particular the guy this article is about!!

It's just like politicians to go and ruin something fun, again. And we are all giving into it. Rivalries are a good thing, but this takes it too far. It's a college football game and no politics butting in or name calling or disrespecting others need to be done. How shameful.

Lighten up. It's all in fun. Not using the letter M tomorrow isn't political at all. This game is a big thing to both Ohioans and Michiganders, who are college football fans. What would have made it all fun is if in the statement Kasich uses to close his letter, he should have written ary Taylor, instead of Mary Taylor. Life is too short, and this world is in too much trouble to be as serious as you are about a football game.

Robin, the most sensible post on this whole idiotic thread about UNIMPORTANT schoolboy football that appeals to simple-minded people like Kasich. Thank you.

I don't often hate, but when I do, I hate Ohio State. Stay bloodthirsty my friends. From the World's Most Interesting Man

Well if you would like to continue hating, fine. You know nothing is like an Ohio athlete... Listen carefully: multi-sport training from an early age makes better athletes. This is the reason that universities in Ohio or near Ohio and FL do well in the three major sports... I'm not even countng hockey or soccer, but I should.

The Buckeyes will likely clobber Michigan as they keep trying to recruit and execute a running game. It hasn't worked and they have to diversify into a passing game. That being said, I don't know where this hatred, which boils on outright childishness, comes from. People from Ohio look down their noses at Michigan? Give me a break. If it wasn't for Cedar Point and the sale of fireworks (now legal in Michigan), who would want to drive through that incredibly ugly state with nothing but flat farmland and the smell of cow ****? Give me the UP any day over that ugly hell hole of a state with a radar trap set up almost everywhere you go.
