SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - A fire official says several cars of the New York-bound Amtrak Crescent carrying 218 passengers and crew has derailed overnight in South Carolina, leaving four people with minor injuries.

Spartanburg County Deputy Fire Marshal Tony Barnett told The Associated Press that the derailment of the Amtrak 20 train from New Orleans occurred at 12:10 a.m. Monday about six miles south of Spartanburg. He says there's no immediate word on the cause and all seven derailed cars remained upright.

He says four passengers with minor injuries were taken to be checked at hospitals. He says those remaining among 207 passengers and 11 crew are still aboard with full power, food and drink. He says passengers will be bused from the train elsewhere.

The Crescent has train has two locomotives and nine cars.

I expect to see a lot of comments about railroads from those who don't know what they are talking about.

Here is another question. Why do the trains in Great Britain, and all over Western Europe function so well? I only mentiion these countries because they are the only systems I have had experience with. I live in SC,USA, so I am familiar with Amtrak as well. I absolutely love riding the trains and city transportion in England and Germany,Italy, etc. My trips have always been made more pleasurable knowing I could depend on the bus, train, etc. Why do we not offer the same in the USA? We are a great country! We just can't seem to get healthcare and riding the rails right!!! Sorry America, I can only speak from past and current ( twice in 2013) experiences.

I like driving around in a car better, because it goes specifically where I want to, when I want to.

A couple of things come to mind ... first, in Europe, everywhere is much closer together -- trains are actually more "efficient" than flying -- here, the distances/time involved make flying more "efficient". Second, we used to have a passenger rail network that was really first rate, but once most people started to fly (to save time), the railroads (and each railroad ran its own passenger service) began losing enough revenue as to be un-profitable. Amtrak was formed by the government so that passenger rail service would not totally disappear. In Europe, the railroads are all Nationalized (run by the government). Third, Amtrak is low priority (even freight trains have higher priority) and the route coverage is very minimal (the trains don't go where many people aren't interested in going).

Amtrak is a disgrace. We have no decent rails. The freight trains beat the hell out of them and our passenger trains..(Amtrak) are forced to run very slowly for safety sake and even then there are constant derailments. This is how it works...every time there is a sudden stop the wheels get a flat spot on them and should be changed however they aren't because of the cost. The flat spot, as you can imagine, ruins the tracks in very quick order. Think of this..during WW2 the tracks in Europe were bombed and nearly all destroyed, but now they have train systems that are quiet, super comfortable, efficient, and run at blazing speed..We have crap! and they are going to stay that way because people in this country think everything we have is the best and why change it.

The priorities in the good ole USA are really screwed up. As I'm sure you realize, that with our legislators, reelection comes first, people's welfare is somewhere in the middle of the list ( if it will help them get reelected).
Modernizing rail travel--forget about it.

Retired CST.......I have been to 100,s of derailments.....100,s of crossing accidents......When you see heads cut off,,,limbs missing and bodies that you can not recognize........this makes you take note...
stop...look and listen.....
And,,,AMTRAK,,,,,,,most rails lines are kept up,,,just above government codes......And,,some,,when you fill rail inspection reports out ,,,,,MOST HAVE BEEN DOCTORED!!!!!! Made to look good.!!!!!
Most rail lines meet bare standards.......I was in Europe in the 1960.s......The rail lines were super...fast speed trains.....
GOVERMENT IS THE MAIN THOUGHT.!!!! MONEY.......MONEY FOR UP KEEP...

The train tracks in this country are very outdated.

The high speed trains that they have in Europe would never be able to travel on them.

You are correct.....I am retired CXT........Amtrak rents the rails it runs on and inspecting and repair of the tracks is up to the rail lines.
Amtrak has never made money,,,it does in the red every year......WHY,,,,,,IT IS OWNED BY THE GOVERMENT....SAME AS POST OFFICE AND ECT...

Amtrak doesn't make money because of their long distance lines that no one rides. From Boston to Washington they make a profit.

Nobody rides? There were 218 people on the train. Not exactly "nobody".

Remember this, Am Trak does not own the rails,BNSF, CONRAIL AND other large freight lines own the track. Am Trak must rent the line or lease the right to use the line. Maintenance of the rails is the resonsibility of the freight line. Freights run heavier and much longer that Am Trak, they are the ones who beat up the line. I love traveling on Am Trak, not for speed but for relaxing vacations and for the most part, they are fun and enjoyable. Bring back rail travel by the biggies and you'll understand the beauty of this country and the thrill of the train ride.

I went AmTrak on my vacation and will never do it again. A 20 hour train trip on the way to my destination took 26 hours because a freight train had broken down on the same track just ahead of us and on the way back, a week later, we were stranded on the track, in the middle of nowhere because of fires in Colorado, which was hundreds of miles away but the train had to make a detour onto another track. We were bussed from some small town to our destinations, also many miles away. There was no food or water on the train and we were stopped in the dark. NEVER AGAIN will I do that!

I'm willing to bet the derailment was caused by a broken rail. Its that time of the year when the steel pulls apart or shrinks leading to a broken rail or pull apart. I work in rail repair and it causes a lot of derailment during this time of the year.

I also worked in same for CSX.......Broken rail is the easiest cause to blame derailment on and this takes the blame off all involved......I have been to 100,s of derailments,,,,,,,,,trainmasters blame track department,,,,roadmaster blames speed or rough handling...
But,,to keep blame off all departments,,,,BROKE RAIL.!!!!!
