The involvement of the private sector is a vast improvement, even if it has not gotten us to Mars yet. Trust me, there are several corporate interests drooling over the possibility of mining asteroids. The influx of raw materials and fuels from asteroids will trigger a rapid expansion into space soon after the first few rocks are strip-mined. Ironically, changing the shape, mass, and content of these rocks may result in orbital changes that will cause a nasty collision with Earth one day.

H.A.L. wasn't evil. He was given incompatible directives that conflicted him and he did his best to interpret them.

With regard to 1984 wouldn't speech codes qualify as 'Newspeak' also bordering on 'Thought Crimes.'

Agreed. I kind of took offense to 1984 being listed at all much less at number one! Whoever put this together lives in a Pollyanna world, sheltered from the reality exploding around them. The only thing non-authentic about 1984 is that the intrusion into privacy in the book and movie are plain to see. In today's world, you are definitely watched, but there is no two-way dialog. TV, News, Movies, Music...all are used to give suggestions to your subconcious on how to act. "They" do not need to watch over the public..."They" are pulling the strings. "But we get to vote for who is President!" Yeah. Given the choice of a handful of pre-vetted candidates. You go to work when they say, you take lunch when they say, you go home when they say. Even now, the government can tell you how to spend your money in the USA (healthcare). It's all getting worse by the year. Problem is, that by the time the average American figures out what is really going on, they are too old to act.

These movies were made strictly for entertainment, not as actual predictions of the future. They were entertaining when they were made. If anyone actually believed that these movies would come to be would have to have a few screws missing. These movies are sheer prove of what great imaginations the writers had.

This online article wasn't meant to be someone's doctoral dissertation. Clearly by the narrator's tone and text, this article on predictions was meant to be cheeky and light. Clearly went way above your head. :-p

Wake up to what? Oh, I get it, you're one of those moon landing conspiracy theory whackos. Do us all a favor. Put your aluminum foil hat back on, retreat back to your basement to avoid the black helicopters, and watch as the sun revolves around the flat earth.

If there are any films that predicted future utopias or dystopias for the purpose of projecting specific social trends to show where they could lead, (which of course most of those named were doing), without hazarding a guess at a date or year, then they have of course evaded being on this list.

The thing about 1984 is that most of the things from that book are happening, like surveillance, perpetual warfare and ideological indoctrination. They are not in the exact same form as described in the book and movie, but that doesn't mean they're not happening to a degree.
Also, one very important thing is that the year 1984 is a part of the propaganda by the government in the book/movie, it is not the actual year, they are not really sure which year it is, but are being told that it is 1984. So this shouldn't really be on this list since it is unclear as to when exactly it takes place.
