In today's episode of Tech Teardown, Erin Kennedy discusses the latest developments in the tech sector with Evan Niu, CFA, our tech and telecom bureau chief.

In headline stories, Chinese Web giant SINA issued a report regarding a survey of Chinese smartphone consumers. The survey, which had 670,000 respondents, showed that consumers are highly concentrated in midrange price points.

Elsewhere, several Qualcomm execs are knocking Microsoft's new Surface 2 tablet. Qualcomm claims Nokia's Lumia 2520 Windows tablet outperforms the Surface 2 in several meaningful ways. The processor producer is just criticizing the Surface 2 because it's running NVIDIA's competing Tegra 4 chip.

In a look at the week ahead, Cupertino colossus Apple is launching its new iPad Air this Friday. Like all major product launches for Apple, this is a significant event, but it's missing one thing.

Social darling Facebook is set to report earnings on Wednesday. The consensus analyst estimate is for Facebook to report about $1.9 billion in revenue, with earnings per share of $0.18. Investors would do well to keep an eye on mobile revenue.

Evan and Erin also examine the latest and greatest rumors in the tech universe. CNET reports Google is building some kind of structure on a floating barge in the San Francisco Bay. Is it a data center 20,000 leagues above the sea floor?

Finally, 9to5Mac cites sources claiming Apple is hoping to open its Rio de Janiero stores in the first calendar quarter of next year, though it's still working on construction and staffing. Brazil is Apple's No. 2. priority internationally, according to CEO Tim Cook.
