How to perfect the art of layering

The pièce de résistance of your wardrobe, a crisp button-down can be worn in endless combinations. One of our favorites? Buttoned up underneath a kitschy sweatshirt and paired with a structured pencil skirt. “Gosh, you’re so on trend,” says everyone in your office.

Worn under a car coat, a denim jacket functions more like a shirt--an awesomely clever shirt, that is.

Wearing a cardigan over your dress = Boring. Wearing a cardigan under your dress = Genius. Get this look by donning a cherished cashmere cardi unbuttoned under a tank dress. Bonus points if you can repurpose one of your summer frocks.

Oscar de la Renta frock ($2,590), Ann Taylor cardigan ($189), Loeffler Randall booties ($395)

Make use of all those peplum tanks you stocked up on and wear ’em over a tissue-thin turtleneck. Black-on-black looks especially chic this time of year.

Nothing pulls multiple layers together quite like a waist-cinching belt.
