Following the unveiling of its September issue starring the late Princess Diana, Vanity Fair has released its annual International Best Dressed List, which, as usual, is full of surprises–some more pleasant than others.

Let's start with the pleasant: The magazine's August cover star Kerry Washington nabbed the number one spot, proving yet again that 2013 is truly her year.

J. Crew's Jenna Lyons was also a welcome addition to this year's list, as were Victoria Beckham, Dita Von Teese and Beyoncé. New mom Kate Middleton was perhaps the least shocking choice, as this marks her third consecutive year on the list.

As for the dudes, Tom Ford fan Justin Timberlake was the top male on the list, though his partner-in-Tom-Ford-loving-crime Jay Z didn't make it. Keith Richards did, though, which we think is amazing.

As for the couples, the utterly cool Tabitha Simmons and Craig McDean made the list, as did utterly predictable Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady.

We can think of more than a few snubs (Alexa Chung? Diane Kruger? Marion Cotillard?) but the biggest would probably have to be Michelle Obama, who was snubbed last year as well. Especially when you consider some of the men and women who made the list over her, like Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan, and fashion blogger Hallie Swanson (presumably thanks to Vanity Fair's decision to open up this year's list to readers).

Of course, it would probably be impossible for Vanity Fair to put out an International Best Dressed List that pleased everyone, right?
