Energen Beats on EPS But GAAP Results Lag
Energen (NYS: EGN) reported earnings on July 31. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended June 30 (Q2), Energen crushed expectations on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue increased. Non-GAAP earnings per share dropped. GAAP earnings per share dropped significantly.
Margins dropped across the board.
Energen reported revenue of $490.1 million. The six analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ looked for a top line of $403.7 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 4.2% higher than the prior-year quarter's $470.4 million.

EPS came in at $0.66. The 14 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ averaged $0.62 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.66 for Q2 were 9.6% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.73 per share. GAAP EPS of $1.15 for Q2 were 37% lower than the prior-year quarter's $1.82 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 62.5%, much worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 29.9%, much worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 17.0%, much worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $413.6 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.59.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $1.81 billion. The average EPS estimate is $3.33.
