Kindness is Always Fashionable: Rachel Roy's Favorite Items That Give Back
The devastating earthquake in Haiti back in 2010 still greatly affects Haitians today. I traveled to Haiti to look for product I could either create or sell with the intent of it directly benefiting the victims of the earthquake. I met a mother/daughter team that gathered found materials and shaped them into the most beautiful modern jewelry- purchasing the jewelry allows them to work and provide for their families- the same right that we all want.
By directly tying charitable donations to the sale of an everyday product, Hand in Hand is able to give soap to those in need . 50 square feet of rain forest saved for every bar purchased… 1 bar of soap and 1 month of clean water donated for every bar purchased. This company makes giving very easy. Their commitment to their cause is everywhere you look on their site- reminding you of their dedication to giving back which makes the purchase a pure joy. I wish more companies would take note of that- Buy a jar, give a jar....I'll take 10 lavender please!
Yummy and its dairy free, gluten free and no added sugar! Momofuku Milk Bar & supermodel Karlie Kloss collaborated on this fashionably wholesome cookie line called Karlie’s Kookies. A portion of the proceeds from each tin of 5boro Kookies goes towards providing 30 meals to New Yorkers affected by hurricane sandy.
I partnered with my girlfriend Lauren Bush Lauren on creating this FEED India 100 bag. Kindness is always fashionable and small actions can make a huge difference- each bag purchased feeds 100 children. I traveled to India with my daughter Ava, to meet the artisans working on the bags and work out the final details of the product. The trip showed me just how much job opportunity was needed in India and what it means to the men and women working on the bag which is priceless.
"Philanthropy made easy, as in, items that give back while showing yourself a little love too- is such a great way to introduce children or friends to a way of life they may not have known about. Selecting product that benefits the world, may just take a bit more time in the finding but hopefully one day soon every brand will be working on programs like this. From my recent collaboration with FEED's Lauren Bush Lauren to Karlie Kloss's Kookies that benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy, these charitable gestures are fun, fashionable and never feel like a chore. Spoil yourself while making a difference with one of these nine finds!"
