D&B Offers Perspectives on Small Business Success in Recognition of National Small Business Week

SHORT HILLS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Small Business Administration's National Small Business Week (June 17-21), D&B (NYS: DNB) today offers perspectives that help small businesses recover, grow and succeed. As a trusted partner to small businesses for more than 171 years and the larger business community that works with them, D&B is committed to providing insights and actionable information to support small business growth.

"Small businesses have certainly been hit hard in recent years, but through our proprietary insight and analytics, we are able to provide foresight into where they are likely to go next," said Paul Ballew, Global Chief Data and Analytic Officer, D&B. "Our predictive indicators are signaling continued improvement. While the outlook is brighter, it's important to understand this recovery remains uneven depending on geography, vertical and individual company health."

Measured by D&B's Small Business Health Index (SBHI), D&B's unique index that looks at the overall strength of the small business sector, the sector has improved to pre-recessionary strength, an important development given the fact that two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. are created by small businesses. An important driver has been the substantial strengthening of their financial health due to proactive initiatives they have undertaken. Other D&B proprietary analytics reveal that more than seven million small businesses are financially well positioned while one-third of all small businesses have a low risk of business failure in the next twelve months.

D&B also works regularly with small business customers, and based on those interactions, has found that successful small businesses typically adopt a set of principles, including use of analytics themselves:

1. Recognize big data is not just for big business - Analytics can be affordable and a big advantage for small businesses

2. Embrace transparency - Small businesses that share information on themselves are more likely to get access to capital

3. Personalize the experience - Social, local and mobile tools can boost customer interactions and loyalty

4. Explore new markets - Growth opportunities can emerge from unlikely places

5. Make resilience the norm - Adaptive and agile small businesses are responsive and ready for change

To learn more about D&B's perspectives on small businesses, D&B has scheduled a webinar discussion on the state of small business recovery on Tuesday, June 18th at 2pm EST. Hosted by Paul Ballew, the webinar will offer unique insights on how small business can succeed in this complex economic environment. Click here to register.
