The WhiteWave Foods Company Announces Sustainability and Community Results

As an Independent Company WhiteWave Remains Steadfast in its Commitment to Improve Communities Where it Operates

BROOMFIELD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The WhiteWave Foods Company ("WhiteWave") (NYS: WWAV) today announced that Dean Foods Company has completed the distribution to Dean Foods stockholders of a portion of its remaining equity interest in WhiteWave.

"As an independent company, The WhiteWave Foods Company is well positioned to grow and create shareholder value as a result of strong brand equity in on-trend categories," said Gregg Engles, WhiteWave Chairman and CEO. "The spin-off will provide WhiteWave with greater flexibility to build its portfolio of great-tasting, nutritious and responsibly produced products. We look forward to our future as an independent company with a clear strategy, a leading portfolio of trusted brands and a culture of continuous innovation."

WhiteWave remains committed to initiatives and causes its consumers, employees and partners care about, including sustainability. WhiteWave strongly believes in the power of its business and brands to make meaningful change, and is making strong progress against its sustainability goals:

  • In the U.S., WhiteWave has already met its 2013 greenhouse gas reduction goal of 25 percent over a 2006 baseline, as well as exceeded its 2013 waste to landfill reduction goal of 30 percent over a 2007 baseline.
  • Also in the U.S., WhiteWave has reduced its non-ingredient water use by 8 percent. The company goal is 15 percent reduction by 2013 over a 2008 baseline, providing an opportunity for continued improvement.
  • In Europe, despite increases in production volumes of 17 percent since 2008, Alpro has succeeded in cutting its waste in half and further reducing its plants' carbon emissions by 14 percent over the same time period. The goal of achieving carbon-neutral production facilities remains a key area of focus for Alpro.

The company also remains committed to finding innovative ways to make a difference in its local communities and everywhere it does business.

In North America, the company has a long-standing partnership with Community Food Share (CFS), a hunger relief organization located near the company's North American location in Broomfield, CO. The company's annual participation in the CFS Compete to Beat Hunger Corporate Challenge helps support thousands of families in need each year. In the past, WhiteWave has matched employee fundraising for this event dollar-for-dollar. In honor of its independent status, this year WhiteWave will contribute $1.50 for every dollar contributed by employees. This year employees raised approximately $80,000, which equates to a total anticipated donation of $200,000, or more than 800,000 meals for those in need.

Another way the company drives positive change is through Alpro's partnership with the World Wildlife Fund, one of the largest and most respected international environmental organizations. Alpro was the first European food company to participate in the World Wildlife Fund Climate Savers program, which brings leading businesses together to develop ambitious plans aimed at significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and is still one of only 30 companies participating in the program. This year Alpro contributed €60,000 to the Climate Savers program, helping to further support its commitment to sustainable development.

WhiteWave will open a new office this summer in downtown Denver, located at 1225 17th Street, which will house its corporate and administrative functions. The Denver office will serve as WhiteWave's global headquarters, providing one centralized location for corporate management. WhiteWave's North American segment location and Alpro offices will remain at their current locations.
