University of Phoenix Collaborates with AMVETS on Scholarship Program

Scholarship program provides active-duty servicemembers, their families and veterans with education opportunities this Memorial Day

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- University of Phoenix® and AMVETS, a vocal advocate for veterans' education, are awarding $350,000 through 50 scholarships worth $7,000 each to active-duty servicemembers, eligible family members and veterans to pursue a degree from University of Phoenix. AMVETS has teamed with University of Phoenix since 2007, offering more than 264 scholarships to demonstrate the appreciation of the sacrifice active-duty servicemembers, their families and veterans make for the country and to help them transition from the military to the civilian sector.

"We at AMVETS are proud to once again partner with University of Phoenix to help make high quality education attainable for our military veterans and their families," said AMVETS National Commander Cleve Geer. "Especially now, with unemployment rates soaring for our youngest veterans, the skills and training available through University of Phoenix can make all the difference to those seeking to transition into civilian careers and provide long term security and stability for themselves and their loved ones."

"As servicemembers return from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, we want to help them prepare for career opportunities in the military and civilian sector," said Associate Regional Vice President for University of Phoenix's Military Division retired Army Col. Garland Williams. "The 2013 University of Phoenix AMVETS Scholarships provide America's active-duty servicemembers, their families and veterans access to education opportunities allowing them to increase their professional skill sets through education to help them secure future employment opportunities."

Even though the post 9/11 veterans unemployment rate is improving compared to a year ago, there is still an urgent need to provide career services for transitioning active-duty servicemembers, their families and veterans. University of Phoenix and AMVETS understand the critical need for America's military to market themselves among job seekers in today's competitive employment landscape.

Applications for the 2013 University of Phoenix AMVETS Scholarship are being accepted now through August 6, 2013, and scholarship recipients will be announced on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2013.
