Unum helps businesses navigate health care reform with new guides, updated web site

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A new collection of tactical guides to what's next in health care reform is helping employers understand and prepare for an uncertain landscape of shifting requirements, choices and needs. The guides from Unum (NYS: UNM) also offer employers expert advice on a total benefits strategy, including financial protection benefits and a strong communication plan.

"Employee benefits have rarely been as widely discussed and considered as they have been in this era of reform," said Andrew Molloy, Unum assistant vice president of Health Management and Insurance Programs. "Unum takes seriously its commitment to help our clients develop benefit strategies to grow their businesses and protect their employees."

The materials include:

  • A health care reform road map: Key steps and strategies for 2013 and beyond: This guide offers an overview of the reform requirements that affect employers most, including "pay or play," new health plan requirements, Health Insurance Exchanges, IRS reporting and more. Included in the report is a pullout timeline that graphically outlines the issues on employers' plates for the next five years.
  • A podcast on "pay or play" explains the factors that may influence an employer's decision — and why they differ according to the size of a business.
  • An updated health care reform web site with insightful, impartial analysis of key mandates and important updates for benefits professionals.

Although Unum's benefits products - such as disability, accident, critical illness and supplemental health coverage - are not directly affected by reform, the company has taken an active role in helping employers evaluate the full effects of health care reform on their benefits and their businesses.

Health care reform is already influencing the benefits decisions of thousands of companies and millions of Americans. That impact will grow as we approach 2014, when the law's most significant provisions kick in.

"In this new reform environment, there is an even greater need to educate employers and employees about the importance of financial protection benefits and how they can be used to help fill gaps in coverage that medical insurance does not address," said Molloy. "Our expertise on health care reform makes us a valuable resource for businesses and brokers who need to understand the opportunities and their responsibilities."
