Restaurant Innovator Brad Blum Joins Entrepreneur and Investor John Vincent To Launch FIVE TO SEVEN, a New Transatlantic Partnership

FIVE TO SEVEN to Raise $50 Million in Investment Capital to Bring the FIVE Principles of 'Good Food' to SEVEN Continents

LONDON & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today marks the launch of FIVE TO SEVEN, a new transatlantic partnership, whose mission is to provide Good Food for the PlanetTM.

Brad Blum, a leader in the U.S. restaurant industry, and John Vincent, founder of British 'naturally fast food' restaurant brand Leon, are raising capital to create and invest in restaurant businesses that provide Good Food for the PlanetTM, whether they be new, emerging businesses or large established brands.

FIVE TO SEVEN will invest in brands and businesses that make it easier for people to live better lives by eating food that meets the following FIVE principles:

  • Exceptionally Good Tasting
  • Remarkably Good For You
  • Leaves You Feeling Good
  • Good Everyday Value
  • Good To The Planet

"Both John and I have learned restaurants can provide entire menus that are nutritionally responsible as well as great tasting," said Blum. "We are now seeking the right owners to help us build these businesses -- investors who believe in this vision and will put their money to work over the long term to further the Good Food for the Planet purpose, and be rewarded for their game-changing investments."

This commitment will address the growing problem of restaurants providing unhealthy food served in unhealthy portions. Blum and Vincent seek to create and invest in sustainably profitable businesses that bring pleasure to people and help solve increasingly acute problems of obesity and food-related illnesses.

"It's time we reassessed our relationship with food," said Blum. "I am reminded constantly of the fact that in 1960, the U.S. spent 17% of their income (GDP) on food and 5% on health care. Today, those numbers have flipped with spending on food falling to 9%, while spending on health care has soared to 16% of national income."

"FIVE TO SEVEN is a purpose and a partnership that Brad and I feel very passionate about," said Vincent. "This is not just an ideal. It is based on concrete consumer demand. If one wants a big business, one has to solve a big problem. And this sure is a big problem."

The goal of FIVE TO SEVEN is to raise $50 million [£33 million] of capital across the next 5 years to create and invest in Good Food for the Planet brands. Each business will live by the FIVE principles and be focused on sustainable profitability.

"We are looking to identify five to seven like-minded investors who share and believe in this purpose, and who will invest alongside us between $5 million and $10 million on a deal-by-deal basis in specific brands," said Blum.

FIVE TO SEVEN's strategy includes the expansion of current Good Food for the Planet brands, specifically:

  • Leon throughout the U.K. and introduce into the U.S.
  • Dogmatic in New York City and introduce into Florida
  • Flatplanet in London and introduce into leading global cities

Vincent and Blum have invested millions of pounds and dollars of their own money, as well as significant amounts of time and effort to build these businesses based on the Good Food for the Planet principles. They are also in active discussions with other founders and CEOs to create innovative partnerships for new 'Good Food' ventures, and anticipate making these public within the next six months.

Vincent added, "We believe in 'positive equity': transparent, trusting, long-term investing characterized by supportive, positive, sustainable relationships with each management team and their employees. These are companies anyone would want to work for."

Blum and Vincent each have a rare combination of corporate, private equity and entrepreneurial experiences and abilities. Both partners have a wealth of food, restaurant and branding experience around the world and share the belief that 'Good Food' will help feed the spirit, transform lives and change society.

Blum became a pioneering figure in the restaurant industry by transforming Olive Garden in the 1990's as president. Starting in 2003, he turned around Burger King as chief executive officer. More recently as CEO of Romano's Macaroni Grill, Blum led the introduction of an all-new Italian Mediterranean menu patterned after the FIVE principles of Good Food for the Planet. Blum won the endorsement of restaurant colleagues by capturing the coveted MUFSO Operator of the Year and Golden Chain Awards in 2000 and the Menu Masters Innovator of the Year Award in 2010. He is currently the founder and owner of BLUM Enterprises focused on creating, operating and expanding profitable 'Good Food' restaurant brands such as Dogmatic and providing insight for the growing Leon brand headquartered in London as board director and investor.

Vincent consistently challenges the status quo, has transformed companies and sectors, and built strong brands. At Bain and Company in Europe, he led a strategic review of a FTSE 50 business, conducted pre-deal due diligence and post-deal value creation projects for private equity clients, and led the turnaround of privately held, UK based Whyte & Mackay. Vincent is co-founder and part owner of Leon Restaurants in the UK, a growing £14 million [US $21 million] business that has the mission of making it easy for everyone to eat good food. Vincent is an award-winning author of Naturally Fast Food, and along with Leon co-founder Henry Dimbleby, is building on Jamie Oliver's work to lead the development of a specific, comprehensive Healthy School Food Plan commissioned by the British government.
