Shire Beats on EPS But GAAP Results Lag
Shire (NAS: SHPG) reported earnings on May 2. Here are the numbers you need to know.

EPS came in at $1.63. The 11 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ forecast $1.57 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $1.63 for Q1 were 10% higher than the prior-year quarter's $1.48 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.12 for Q1 were 71% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.41 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 86.6%, 10 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 29.5%, 450 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 5.6%, much worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $1.23 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $1.65.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $4.93 billion. The average EPS estimate is $6.70.
