The Best and Worst Hair Removal Techniques

We know, we know - this seems like a no-brainer. But these days, with fancy salon treatments and at-home hair removal kits, you might find yourself in need of a quick refresher on a classic technique.

PROS: It's certainly the cheapest and one of the less painful options of the bunch. Grab yourself a razor and a can of shaving cream and you're good to go!

CONS: Well, the bad thing about shaving is that you have to do it all the time. We don't know about you, but those extra ten minutes of shower time that shaving requires are always such a hassle in the morning. The other thing about shaving is that it always seems like we miss a few spots, no matter what we do. And don't even get us started on razor burn. Use those razors gently!

Bottom Line: Shaving will always be our go-to hair removal technique, since it's quick and effective. We just wish the hair actually stayed off for more than a few days! If you're going on vacation and don't want to waste time with a razor, we suggest a trip to the salon. 

Ouch! We all know what waxing is - a semi-permanent form of hair removal that involves ripping a strip of paper stuck to hot, sticky wax straight off delicate skin.

PROS: Basically any part of the body can be waxed easily, and skin stays hair-free for about two-eight weeks post-removal.. Warning: we recommend going to a professional for most areas of the body. If you're dead set on trying at home, start with something easy, like your legs. Waxing is also a quick way to cover large areas of the body fast. One trip to the salon, and you're out the door in 20 minutes.

CONS: Umm….OUCH. Need we say more? Despite the fact that this girl is smiling, we're pretty sure most gals can't say the same for their own waxing experiences. Also, hot wax plus delicate skin can often mean irritation and unsightly bumps. 

Bottom Line: If you aren't afraid of a little pain and are looking for a few weeks of hair-free worries, we say go for it. Just remember to load up on products that will prevent ingrown hairs and irritation. 

OK, so, if you haven't heard of sugaring, it's pretty similar to waxing. However, many that this ancient Middle Eastern practice is significantly less painful. 

PROS: Sugaring requires a paste or gel formula, instead of hot wax, to remove hair. The technician then flicks off the solution in the same direction as the hair growth. Since the sugaring paste doesn't dry out like wax, it's super easy to do very large areas quickly, making the whole process even faster than waxing. 

CONS: It's still a lot of hair being ripped out at once, so we hate to say it, but - it's going to be painful. Also, salons that practice sugaring can be difficult to find.

Bottom Line: All things considered, it might not be totally worth it to invest in sugaring. It can be hard to find a technician  who uses the proper procedure, and there can be lots of redness and irritation involved when not done correctly. However, if you're dead-set on getting that hair off quickly and painlessly, try searching for a salon in your area that has the practice down pat. 

Did you know the term depilatory literally means "removing hair?"  Even so, it's not exactly our favorite method. Read on to find out why.

PROS: Depilatory cream breaks down the hair follicle slowly, so five-ten minutes after wiping the product on, hair should gently break away from your skin. The best part? It's pretty fool-proof and 100% pain-free.

CONS: Have you ever smelled a depilatory? Yuck! The stench is pretty much all chemicals, which usually means the product is chock full of them. Speaking of chemicals, we're also not totally keen on spreading a bunch of them all over delicate skin. Another negative is that the hair isn't removed at the root, so you'll see fuzz after a day or two.

Bottom Line: If you can stand the smell and aren't afraid of a little chemical indulgence, depilatory creams are a pain free way to rid yourself of body hair. 

CHAMOMILE TEA BAGS

If you’re plagued by dark and puffy under-eye circles, help comes in the form of a your morning beverage. According to Livestrong.com, tea bags contain two important compounds – caffeine and tannins (anti-inflammatory astringents)– that reduce those pesky, puffy areas. Steep your tea bags in boiling water for five minutes, pop them in the fridge to cool, and then do a little at-home spa with each bag covering an entire eye area. We recommend chamomile because of its added anti-inflammatory properties. Your tired eyes will be instantly refreshed.

BASIL

We always knew basil was a delicious addition to tomato sauce, but for our hair – yuck! Well, we’re singing a different tune now that we know a little crushed up fresh basil leaves mixed with water creates a paste that’s perfect for repairing dry and dull sun-damaged hair.

GARLIC

Garlic was once known to ward off Dracula and his buddies, but we’ve discovered cloves of this pungent cooking ingredient can also scare off the unfriendly visitors to our skin – zits! Ayurvedic healers believe the antioxidant properties in garlic can help heal acne scars and prevent new blemishes from forming. You can apply fresh garlic juice directly onto a newly formed pimple, or dilute with water and cleanse with a washcloth. If the smell offends you, simply soak peeled cloves in milk for an hour.

EGG WHITES

Egg whites are lauded for their health benefits, but we’re currently way more into their anti-aging properties. Used in a mask, egg whites can tighten and firm sagging skin. Simply whip the egg whites in a bowl, whisk, and apply to skin. After thirty minutes, skin will bright and refreshed, as if you’ve just received a facial. Other benefits of egg whites include oil reduction and whitehead removal. Now that’s what we like to hear!

AVOCADO

Avocados aren’t just for guacamole. This superfood fights aging and provides intense moisture for dry skin, and can also help get rid of age spots while leaving pores free and clear. A face mask containing the fruit is all you need to benefit from its healing properties.

BROWN SUGAR

Healthy, radiant skin begins with exfoliation, but there’s no need to spend money on costly scrubs. Brown sugar granules clear away dead skin just as well, if not better, than any drug store product. Combine a half of a cup with a few tablespoons of olive oil and some water, pour the mixture in an empty jar, and you’re good to go.

SOUR CREAM

It can be hard to find products that won’t irritate sensitive skin, but sour cream, which includes lactic acid, smoothes and nourishes gently. The acid is a type of alpha hydroxyl acid, found in many skin care products, and works to improve skin tone and texture. Apply a tablespoon of the full-fat variety and leave on your face for 20 minutes for a healthy, glowing complexion.

APPLE JUICE

This kiddie favorite can act as a natural toner and astringent. Apply to the face with cotton balls to tighten pores and restore your skin’s pH balance, restoring moisture to your skin where it needs it.

CORNSTARCH

For an oily complexion, a loose powder can be a lifesaver, but with just a few swipes of cornstarch applied gently to the skin, there’s no need for a store-brought product. Apply the cornstarch just as you would your favorite setting powder – you can even place it inside an empty compact! Your complexion will stay matte and free of shine all day.

WASABI

Wasabi is known for being super-spicy, but it can also seriously spice up your lips. Apply a small amount of wasabi paste directly onto lips for a seriously pumped up pout. Who needs injections and fillers when you can get a natural remedy at the grocery store?

BEER

For fine hair, beer is an easy solution to obtaining thicker strands. After shampooing, rinse hair with a can of flat beer. The yeast plumps up the hair shaft, resulting with a more voluminous style. Just be sure to rinse well with plenty of water and conditioner after!

ONION

Are you growing out your eyebrows? Onions are the most natural (if not the most pungent) solution. The sulphur in onion juice can aid in speedy regrowth of eyebrow hair, so grind one up and apply the juice to a cotton ball. Rub directly under eyebrows for best results.
