All About Oscar de la Renta: And the Stars Who Adore Him
We've seen his gowns on the runway, red carpet, and in more recent years, walking down the aisle! They're worn by some of our favorite stars who always look flawless, because they have placed their trust in this brilliant designer to keep them glamorous.
Born and raised in the Dominican Republic (with 6 sisters!), Oscar de la Renta moved to Madrid when he was 18 to study painting. It was there that he was wooed by the fashion industry.
Now known for his distinctly modern yet feminine evening wear, he began his own fashion label in 1965 at the age of 33. He became internationally known in the 60's as he was one to dress Jacqueline Kennedy (lucky guy!). He married Francoise de Langlade two years later, an editor-in-chief of French Vogue. She helped get his line in the limelight, inviting some of the most prominent and wealthy figures to his shows.
Sadly, his wife Francoise died of bone cancer in 1983. It was a great tragedy for de la Renta, and shortly after, he adopted a son from the Dominican. He later met and married his second wife, Annette Reed, in 1990.
The 1990's brought about a new direction for de la Renta, but his designs were still deeply coveted for their elegance and flattering silhouettes. Starting with Nancy Reagan, he was a chosen designer for the United States First Ladies for years, also creating gowns for Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush. He has many celebrity fans including Sarah Jessica Parker and Penelope Cruz, and fashionista fans like us!
