Cliffs Natural Resources Whiffs on Earnings
Cliffs Natural Resources (NYS: CLF) reported earnings on Oct. 24. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Sep. 30 (Q3), Cliffs Natural Resources missed estimates on revenues and whiffed on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue dropped significantly and GAAP earnings per share contracted significantly.

EPS came in at $0.61. The 22 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ forecast $1.07 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.59 for Q3 were 86% lower than the prior-year quarter's $4.07 per share. (The prior-year quarter included -$0.12 per share in earnings from discontinued operations.)

For the quarter, gross margin was 12.8%, 2,550 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 4.9%, 3,110 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 5.5%, 2,200 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $1.69 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.90.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $6.29 billion. The average EPS estimate is $4.84.
