Boeing (NYS: BA) reported earnings on Oct. 24. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Sep. 30 (Q3), Boeing met expectations on revenues and crushed expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue grew and GAAP earnings per share contracted.


Margins shrank across the board.

Revenue details
Boeing notched revenue of $20.01 billion. The 22 analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ predicted revenue of $20.00 billion on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 13% higher than the prior-year quarter's $17.73 billion.

EPS details
EPS came in at $1.35. The 24 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $1.12 per share. GAAP EPS of $1.35 for Q3 were 8.2% lower than the prior-year quarter's $1.47 per share. (The prior-year quarter included $0.01 per share in earnings from discontinued operations.)

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 16.1%, 290 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 7.2%, 220 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 5.2%, 100 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $21.96 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $1.13.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $81.21 billion. The average EPS estimate is $4.74.

Investor sentiment
