Siemens Smart Grid Debuts "Surgical" Demand Response System for Utilities

Technology allows for targeted demand reductions to help utilities increase reliability and reduce cost

MINNETONKA, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Siemens Smart Grid has introduced Demand Response Management System (DRMS) Version 2.0, a technology that manages demand response programs more effectively than traditional processes used by utilities. The new system is one of the first to surgically target demand reductions via substation, feeder, zip code or geographical location that allows utilities to reduce power loads at critical sections of their distribution network. Siemens will host an exclusive webinar on November 7th highlighting the new technology.

Siemens DRMS 2.0 manages all aspects of demand response, optimizing features and functionalities to allow for greater flexibility by being able to map utility business processes into the demand response equation. The new technology allows utilities to condition the load to meet system needs, surgically curtailing specific loads within tailored demand response events to achieve any number of operational or market objectives. Siemens DRMS technology can take the stress off of an asset and reduce the load, facilitating greater reliability and asset life throughout the grid. At the same time, the application allows users to structure programs to maximize energy market opportunities.

"This is one of the first demand response systems that can surgically pinpoint a load overage or outage event, making it easier for utilities to distribute reliable power while reducing lifecycle costs at their facilities," said Thierry Godart, president of Siemens Smart Grid Division in the U.S. "Siemens is proud to offer a technology solution that will help ensure utilities have more efficient and dependable systems for targeted, real-time demand event monitoring while modernizing the grid to meet the country's growing electricity needs."

This flexible platform has full reporting capabilities for event performance, load analysis and calculation of billing determinants while helping to reduce utility costs by automating the manual, cumbersome processes of demand response, reducing maintenance and lifecycle costs, and allowing utilities to generate additional revenue through transacting demand response load in the marketplace.

Siemens DRMS 2.0 was released on October 1st and is currently available to utilities. Please visit www.usa.siemens.com/demandresponse for more information and to sign-up for the November 7th webinar on the offering.
